This page is a collection of links to
my own pages in the "Pine Tree Web" and to related links on Scouting. The focus
is on my particular interests in Scouting which include: the life and times
of the Founder, Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell, the
heritage, history and traditions of Scouting, leadership development, and International Scouting, with a
particular emphasis on Scouting in Eastern Europe and Russia.
My pages have been collected under the title of
the "Pine Tree Web" to tie several diverse subjects together and to recognize
the author's links to a Scouting endeavor, Pine Tree Camp, that
has special meaning in his own Scouting experience.

Baden-Powell Family History.
A series of links starting
with
the research of Robin Baden Clay, a grandson of Baden-Powell. These
links are
focused on the genealogy of the Powell family. The author is extremely
grateful to Mr. Clay for sharing the results of his labors with the
Scouting community. Links are provided to pages for three of B-P's
brothers: Baden, Warington and Sir George Baden-Powell, to members of
his extended family, and to the
genealogy of the Smyth and Warington families. |

An unique
insight into the life and contributions of the Chief Guide is her autobiography,
"Window on My Heart: The Autobiography of
Olave, Lady Baden-Powell, G.B.E. as told to Mary Drewery."
Chapters VII-XIX cover her life from her first meeting with B-P in 1912
until his passing in 1941. These chapters are reproduced by
permission of the publisher, Hodder and Stoughton Limited, London.

Baden-Powell took great pleasure in
fly fishing. Douglas Precourt, an avid fly fisherman and active Scouter,
has written a wonderful article, "Fishing
with Baden-Powell: Stories of the Chief Scout and His Love of Angling"
which was published in The
American Fly Fisher, Journal of the American Museum of Fly Fishing.
It is republished here through the courtesy of the author. |

Baden Powell's
Boy Scouts Beyond the Seas, "My World Tour"
covers his extensive travels for Scouting in 1912. He was delighted to
find Scouting taking hold, first in Britain, the Dominions and the
British Colonies. As his travels continued he would observe: "Then
Scouting began to be taken up by the boys of other nations, until now
practically every country has its part of our brotherhood." |
|
|
In 1914, B-P wrote an article for
The Strand Magazine entitled, "The
Most Impressive Sight I Ever Saw." It described the Royal Rally of
Boys Scouts at Windsor in 1911, when 30,000 Scouts were reviewed by King George
V. While he described this event in several of his own works, this is a
particularly poignant and colorful version. |

It was at the
Siege and Defense of Mafeking during the South African
(Anglo-Boer) War that Baden-Powell made his name and first gained
public recognition. 1999-2002 marks the Centennial of the War. Developed as part of that
observance, Perspectives on the South African War
provides a collection of links to original and contemporary sources on the South
African War. |
|
|
"This
small place, which sprang in the course of a few weeks from obscurity
to fame ..." opens Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's retelling of The Siege
of Mafeking. Author of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, Conan
Doyle provides an excellent
contemporary account of the siege in his history, The Great Boer War. |
|
|
Published at the end of the first
year of the war, H. W. Wilson's With the Flag to Pretoria
devotes portions of three chapters to the Siege
and Relief of Mafeking. "Illustrated
mainly from photographs and authentic sketches taken in South
Africa," it includes several rare photos of Baden-Powell.
|
|
|
"Events
at Mafeking" is the final chapter of Howard Hensman's A History
of Rhodesia. Hensman writes: "The book was mainly conceived and
written before the out break of the war, but with the object of making
the volume as complete as possible chapters dealing with the sieges of
Kimberly and Mafeking and Colonel Plumer's Rhodesian force have been
added." |

Edited by
L. S. Amery, The Times
History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902,
was published in seven volumes between 1900 and 1909. It contains
perhaps the most comprehensive contemporary history of the war and is
based on the reports of war correspondents of The Times as well
as noted historians of the day. The
Preface and Introduction provide some contemporary insights. Chapters in Volume II and IV detail the
Siege and Relief of Mafeking in 1899. |

Lord Roberts commanded
the British forces in Afghanistan during Baden-Powell's service in
1881-1882. He was later to become the Commander-in-Chief in India
(1885-1893), in the South African War (1899-1902) and, finally
Commander-in-Chief of the British Army (1901-1904). For much of
Baden-Powell's active military service, Lord Roberts was among the highest
ranking and most respected officers of the British Army. He became known
as "Kipling's General." |
|
|
In 1902, Commander
Charles N. Robinson, R.N., edited and published
Celebrities of the Army, a collection of portraits and short biographies of senior
offices and major heroes of the South African War. These include
Baden-Powell and several officers with whom he served in India and
Africa both before and during the war. The portraits are quite elegant
and are presented along with biographical information. |

illustrations of his water-color paintings from illustrations in a variety of sources. |

About Pine Tree
Camp
This page is dedicated to the Scouts of
Pine Tree Camp, the Junior Leader Training Conference of the Viking Council in
Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Beginning in 1989, Pine Tree served as
the proving grounds for redesign of the Junior Leader Training Conference, a week-long
leadership development program sponsored by local Councils for the top youth leaders of
Scout troops. In addition to changes in program and Scoutcraft activities, a renewed
emphasis on the values of Scouting was a key element. These efforts led to the revision of
the Junior Leader Training Conference Staff Guide in 1993 and the incorporation of new
elements in the leadership training programs of the BSA. The emphasis on Scouting as a
special place (a "safe haven"), and the use of the reflection process were two
of the most significant enhancements.
More information on the focus on values,
on the safe haven in Scouting, and on the process of reflection, will be found at my web
pages titled "Scouting is a Game with a Purpose".
