I am a professional writer, broadcaster and journalist. Amongst my many other interests, I having been studying and documenting the life and career of Douglas Adams for more than 20 years. Here is my Hitchhiker's Guide CV:

Hitchhiker: A Biography of Douglas Adams
This first full-length, detailed biography of Douglas Adams was published in 2003 and is currently available in paperback in the UK and in hardback in the USA. It won the SFX Award for Best Non-Fiction, was nominated for the British Science Fiction Association Award and was described by Publisher's Weekly as "a must-have for serious Adams fans". The UK edition has a foreword by John Lloyd, the US edition has a foreword by Neil Gaiman.

The Pocket Essential Hitchhiker's Guide
This comprehensive guide to the works of Douglas Adams was published in 2001, shortly before Douglas passed away. It details all the different versions of Hitchhiker's Guide in different media and also looks at Douglas' other work, and has a foreword by Simon Jones.

Don't Panic: Douglas Adams and the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
For the third edition of Neil Gaiman's acclaimed book in 2002, I was asked to provide four new chapters to bring the story up-to-date, and also to revise and update the existing text.

The Salmon of Doubt
When this collection of rare and unpublished Douglas Adams material was compiled in 2001-02, I was asked to help with tracking down and identifying many of the items.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Original Radio Scripts - 25th Anniversary Edition
I suggested this 2003 re-publication of the long out-of-print scriptbook to the publisher. It includes my notes on the radio series' cast and crew and I also provided the script of 'Sheila's Ear', a 13th mini-episode of Hitchhiker's Guide which had been lost for 20 years.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: 25th Anniversary Illustrated Edition
For this 'deluxe' edition of the original novel, published in 2004, I was asked to provide a detailed essay on the history of Hitchhiker's Guide. The book also contains photographs of rare and unusual Hitchhiker's memorabilia, much of it from my collection.

Douglas Adams at the BBC
This 2004 collection of radio and TV material by Douglas Adams was compiled following my suggestion and I worked closely with the researcher and producer in tracking down and identifying rare recordings, including the 'Sheila's Ear' sketch which was missing from the BBC archives.

ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha
I served for two years as editor of the club magazine of ZZ9, the Official Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Appreciation Society, and for two years as the society's President. Since then I have held the honorary post of Research Archivist.

Other publications
I have written articles about Douglas Adams/Hitchhiker's Guide in SFX, Starburst and Book & Magazine Collector and contributed chapters to the following books, all scheduled for publication in the next year:

  • 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' in The Encyclopaedia of Themes in Science Fiction and Fantasy (ed. Gary Westfahl)
  • 'Douglas Adams' in Popular Contemporary Writers (ed. Thomas McCarthy)
  • 'Counterpointing the Surrealism of the Underlying Metaphor in the TV series of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' in Don't Panic: Essays on British TV Science Fiction (ed. John Cook & Peter Wright)

The Tertiary Phase
I contributed advice as an unpaid, uncredited script consultant on the third radio series and was the only professional journalist allowed to visit the recording

The Movie
I have recently completed production notes for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie. I was granted the only pre-production interview with the director and producer and was one of only a handful of journalists allowed to visit the set.

Radio and TV work
I have been interviewed about Hitchhiker's Guide on numerous radio and TV shows including The Big Read: Battle of the Books, Ultimate Top Ten Sci-Fi, Reading the Decades and Top Ten TV. I also acted as consultant on the documentaries Life, the Universe and Douglas Adams and Douglas Adams: The Man Who Blew Up the Earth.
