Reading Rainbow, hosted by LeVar Burton, is a critically-acclaimed award-winning half-hour PBS series that turns children on to books and reading. The series targets 4-8 year olds, and is based on research that identifies these early years as the optimum time for children to learn to read, and to adopt positive reading habits, skills and attitudes.

To support this series and encourage children’s creative expression, Reading Rainbow and NJN are gearing up for the 11th Annual Young Writers and Illustrators Contest, a nationwide contest that encourages, challenges and rewards children, kindergarten through third grade, to share stories—using their words and pictures. These stories are judged locally and the first and second place winners in each of the K-3rd grade categories are submitted to the National Contest.

NJN, in conjunction with our contest sponsor, Barnes & Noble of Princeton, plan to honor our winners at a special awards ceremony on Saturday, May 7, 2005. We thank you Barnes & Noble for your continued commitment to New Jersey’s children.

A child's success as a reader begins much earlier than the first day of school. Reading, and a love for reading, begins at home. We know that today's lifestyles do not leave enough time in a day to spend with our families. Are you wondering what kinds of activities would make your child interested in books and the love of reading?

Parents need to begin instruction in the early years-as early as when a child is born-by singing lullabies and introducing bright colored objects. At the age of six months choose books with brightly colored, simple pictures and lots of rhythm in the text. Find out what everyday activities you can share with your child so that he/she develops a love for reading and writing.
