"What is Scouting?"

You know when most people think of Cub Scouts, they think of a group of boys meeting with their den leader, making crafts and learning new skills. Well, that image is part of Cub Scouting - but only a method we use to reach our real goals. Actually, Cub Scouts is an educational program to help you, as parents, develop your son’s character. To teach him citizenship and help him to be physically, mentally, and morally fit. In other words, to prepare him for life.

“The Mission and Goals of the Cub Scout Program”

The Cub Scout Motto is Do Your Best.

Remember, Cub Scouting is a program for all boys and instead of placing emphasis on winning or losing, each boy is urged to simply do his best. And Cub Scouting works because of parental volunteers, like yourself, who are involved in their boy’s activity.

First, Cub Scouting is family oriented. Cub Scout activities are intended for the whole family to participate - parents, brothers, sisters, and even grandparents. Your son will work with you on many of his Cub Scout projects and award requirements. Many skills he will learn are family and home related.

Second, your son is part of a Cub Scout Den - a group of 5-8 boys from his grade at school. Each den is led by a volunteer den leader and assistant den leaders. The group meets weekly for games, crafts, and other fun activities.

Third, your son’s den is part of a Cub Scout Pack. The pack is made up of all the different den’s from our pack.

Once a month, all our dens gather together for a family night, called a pack meeting. The pack meeting is not just for Cub Scouts, but also for parents, brothers and sisters, and even Grandpa and Grandma. At the pack meeting we recognize the boys and their parents by presenting the awards they have earned in the past month. It also gives the den a chance to show off what they did together during their meetings.

Our Cub Scout pack is also supported by a group of parents, which you can be part of, called the pack committee. The pack committee does most of the planning for pack activities and events. We are also supported by a local community organization called our Chartering Organization which helps us find a place to meet and provides other support.

“Special Activities”

In addition to den and pack meetings, Cub Scouts also participate in many special activities. Some of these include:

1. Our annual Pinewood Derby car race.
2. Blue and Gold Banquet in Janurary.
3. Religious Emblems.
4. Cub Scout day camp in the summer.
5. Camping in Walt Disney World
6. Trashcan Turkeys at our Family Camping Trip
7. Boys’ Life magazine.
As you can see, the programs offered through Cub Scouting are fun and adventurous.
