These Are the Breaks: The Hip-Hop Files

Find out who De La and the Beasties have sampled.

April 19, 2001

This latest installment of These Are the Breaks is a little different from the others, in that it's not strictly breaks. It's famous loops from hip-hop songs. You may notice that most of these loops are from the late 80s/early 90s era of hip-hop. That's because not only do I consider that the best time for hip-hop, but it's also because I'm old and nostalgic.

Now... these are the hip-hop breaks!

Song: "Bra"
Artist: Cymande
Sampled by: De La Soul on "Change in Speak"
Hear It: MP3
Prince Paul must have an amazing record collection, judging by the amount of ultra-rare records he's sampled. Three Feet High and Rising must be worth around $5000 in rare grooves alone! "Bra" by Cymande, a UK funk group from the early 70s, is on their self-titled debut album and it's worth a hell of a lot of money. It's also incredible.

Song: "Ike's Mood 1"
Artist: Isaac Hayes
Sampled by: Biz Markie on "Make the Music With Your Mouth"
Hear It: MP3
Marley Marl is another super dope hip-hop producer who knows his wax. Him, Prince Paul, and Large Professor can all cut a mean groove.

Song: "Last Bongo in Belgium"
Artist: Incredible Bongo Band
Sampled by: Beastie Boys on "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun"
Hear It: MP3
If you've read any of our past These Are the Breaks articles, you'll know how much I love the Incredible Bongo Band. Their "Apache" is dynamite. "Last Bongo in Belgium" has this amazing one-minute beat, complete with deep 70s phase. St. Etienne also sampled this.

Song: "Summer Madness"
Artist: Kool and the Gang
Sampled by: Everybody (but most noticeably Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince)
Hear It: MP3
Such a simple melody (just stepping up octaves) but so powerful. Everybody's sampled or interpolated this, including me on numerous occasions. Like that counts.

Song: "You Can Make it if You Try"
Artist: Sly and the Family Stone
Sampled by: Jungle Brothers on "I Got it Like That"
Hear It: MP3
Oh yeah. Sly was way of his time. I mean, James Brown was still doing the amphetamine soul thing in 1968 when Sly pumped out this gem. The entire Stand! album is raw and hot.

Song: "Got to Get a Knut"
Artist: New Birth
Sampled by: De La Soul on "Can U Keep a Secret"
Hear It: MP3
More De La obscurities. This song is over 10 minutes long and keeps changing and warping.

Song: "Funky Worm" (first keyboard solo)
Artist: Ohio Players
Sampled by: N.W.A. on "Dope Man"
Hear It: MP3
The Ohio Players fell off hard when they switched to Mercury, but their Westwood output is all pretty strong. However, it's the "Funky Worm" (off Pleasure) that everybody knows them for.

Song: "Funky Worm" (second keyboard solo)
Artist: Ohio Players
Sampled by: MC Breed on "Ain't No Future in Your Frontin'"
Hear It: MP3
"And when I get my jeep I'm puttin' Breed on the chrome."

Song: "Giving Up Food for Funk"
Artist: The JB's
Sampled by: De La Soul on "Say No Go" (as well as by Timbaland and Magoo)
Hear It: MP3
This little guitar intro has been used by everybody. And why not? It's brilliantly simple.

Song: "Gangster Boogie"
Artist: Chicago Gangsters
Sampled by: LL Cool J on "Mama Said Knock You Out" (and tons others)
Hear It: MP3
Oh boy, the gangstas love to use this loop.

Adam Douglas loves this stuff
