The Nashville City Council has put off a vote on adding “sexual orientation” and “gender” to the city’s anti-discrimination ordinance. Local Christian groups and pastors have expressed opposition to the addition of sexual behaviors as a protected class in the city’s law. Church-related groups would be forced to hire homosexuals if this ordinance is passed.
Some proponents are advocating a “religious exemption” to protect religious groups but this is simply a homosexual strategy to get the ordinance through. If passed, it wouldn’t be long before the religious exemption was removed by lawsuit or city council action.
Unfortunately, the city of Nashville was exposed to the vile rantings of Rev. Fred Phelps, a Topeka, Kansas pastor who operates a “God Hates Fags” web site. Phelps and five of his followers showed up with protest signs saying “Thank God for September 11” and shouted “You’re all going to hell.”
TVC’s Rev. Sheldon has publicly rebuked Phelps when he has attempted to inflame hatred against homosexuals. Phelps’ anti-Christian actions are despicable and should be rejected by all who claim to be Christians. His hateful message provides aid and comfort to the homosexual agenda because his visibility paints all Christians in a bad light. Phelps is an enemy of Christianity and an embarrassment to all of us who are opposed to the normalization of homosexuality in our culture. We unequivocally condemn his actions and his message.
