Windows Desktop Update for IE5.0: http://www.geocities.com/plansdowne_ca/ =============== from my E-mail; Subject: Win9x/NT4 shell32.dll security update is an IE update Date: Fri, 12 Apr 2002 11:17:33 -0700 From: "Emmanuel Piring" To: alice I do NOT recommend downloading & installing the Desktop Update from that Geocities-PlansDowne site: http://www.geocities.com/plansdowne_ca/ Installing it that way does not install the desktop update properly [their way can cause problems later on] Using the IE 5.x setup program, editing the 'iesetup.cif' file, changing UIVISIBLE=0 to UIVISIBLE=1 under either the [IE4Shell_NTx86] or [IE4Shell_Win] section is much more effective & the IE 5.x will properly install the desktop update. Win98 users must modify two lines when upgrading the Desktop Update, both the UIVISIBLE line & the Platform line in the [IE4Shell_Win] section. Under that section for Win98 users the two lines should look like this in the iesetup.cif file: Platform=Win95,Win98 UIVISIBLE=1 Those two lines will display the Desktop Update option when doing a Custom Install of IE 5.x under Win98 (both 1st & 2nd editions). This won't work with IE 6 because it has the desktop update for NT4 only. And removing IE 5.x under Win98 doesn't remove the updated desktop component (only under Win95 & NT4). Upgrading the desktop update under Win98 1st ed. updates Explorer.exe & shell32.dll to version 4.72.3612.1700 (under win98 2nd ed. the active desktop component from ie 5.x updates only the explorer.exe file). Although they may be stuck with the older Win95 style interface, it is possible to update it to the Win98 style, with browser-like windows and the Quick Launch toolbar located next to the Start Button. To do this, you need to install the Windows Desktop Update package, also known as Active Desktop (although they are not the same thing: Active Desktop is merely a part of the Desktop Update). This is included with Internet Explorer version 4.x only; it is not included with IE5.x or IE6. You must install IE4.x before upgrading to a later version of IE if you want the Desktop Update installed. If you have already installed IE 5.x or IE6 and would like to install the Windows Desktop Update, carry out the following steps: 1.Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.x or Internet Explorer 6. 2.If Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 (the latest version of IE4) is not already installed on your computer, install it. 3.Install the Windows Desktop Update. 4.Reinstall Internet Explorer 5.x or Internet Explorer 6. Unfortunately, Microsoft has removed IE4 from its website and is no longer available for download. You can still find IE4 in various places, like the Windows NT Option Pack CD, Windows 95 C OSR2.5 CD, and the Outlook 98 CD. If you can not obtain IE4, there are still a few ways to install the Desktop Update, but you must have a copy of IE5Setup.EXE, which is included with the Internet Explorer 5.x installation source files. 1.Make sure that you are connected to the Internet. 2.Open a DOS Prompt/Command prompt, and go to the directory where the IE5 installation source files are located. 3.Then execute the following command: For NT4.0: IE5Setup.exe /C:"ie5wzd /e:IE4Shell_NTx86 /I:Y" For WIN95: IE5Setup.exe /C:"ie5wzd /e:IE4Shell_WIN /I:Y" Note that these commands have not been tested with IE6. Microsoft also offers an alternative to installing IE4 by customising an IE5 installation using the Internet Explorer Administration Kit. It should be possible to do the same thing for IE6 using the IE6 IEAK as well. For simplicity, it is recommended that you try the above commands first. Run IE setup normally & when the License Agreement Screen appears open Windows Explorer and browse to the 'C:\Windows\temp\ixp000.tmp' folder [do not click on the Next button in the IE setup box]. In that folder find the 'iesetup.cif' file & open it in Notepad. Under the section [IE4Shell_WIN] (if using Win95) or the [IE4Shell_NTx86] section (if using WinNT4) find the line that says UIVISIBLE=0. Change it to read UIVISIBLE=1, save the file and continue on with IE setup but choose the Custom Install option. Details posted here: http://www.ntfaq.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=21592 The 2 methods are only temporary solutions & have to be repeated if running IE setup again to install IE 5.x & the Desktop Update (all without having to install IE 4.x & without using IEAK) AND there is NO option to remove the Desktop Update with IE 5.x unless you uninstall the IE 5.x web browser (the whole thing). I'm not looking back to the old Explorer interface of Win95/NT4. after installing the desktop component with either method enable the 'Show File Attributes In Detail View' option by downloading this zip file from this site: http://www.pcforrest.freeserve.co.uk/zip/showattr.zip * extract the .reg file inside & double-click on it to add the option in the Folder Options View tab. ======== *NOTE: PCForrest's site has changed so using the new URL in the link for the showattr.zip file becomes http://www.forrestandassociates.co.uk/pcforrest/zip/showattr.zip AW ======== rom: kip (kip@email.msn.com) Subject: Re: Active desktop Newsgroups: microsoft.public.inetexplorer.ie4.browser Date: 2001-09-08 08:32:21 PST How do I get Active Desktop? A review of past posts using an archive like DejaNews/Google may find other, probably similar replies or suggestions. *** one of my standard replies follows *** Officially, Win95/NT4 users should migrate through IE4 and install the "Desktop Update" before any upgrades to maintain this functionality in IE5/IE6. How to Add or Remove Windows Desktop Update http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q165/6/95.asp -but- the method described in KB Q165695 is a bit problematic when the IE4 software is not available from Microsoft web sites... If you want to 'play it safe', un-install IE5, re-install those IE4 components and then do the IE5 upgrade again. Since IE4 is not available on the MS web sites, you might need to check for any local install media or look for old IE4 software on some old CD from a computer magazine or ISP -or- any Y2K or NT4 service pack update disks from Microsoft. IE4 is also on recent TechNet CD releases. * Now perhaps an alternate approach... The "Desktop Update" Cab file set is a single cab file... for a Win95 machine, file name is "ie4shl95.cab" (approx 850 KB) for WinNT it would be called "ie4shlnt.cab" (approx 1 MB) These files are in fact available on many IE5 CDs and even on the download sites (if you know a few tricks) * This part is 'unofficial' but seems to work for most folks... custom IE5 builds can be configured to include the Desktop Update components. Many of the same custom IEAK command line switches will work for normal users in 'manual mode'. To install the desktop components, you can re-launch the IE5 setup program manually with some extra install flags... for Win 95... ...\your local path to\IE5Setup.exe /C:"ie5wzd /e:IE4Shell_WIN /I:Y" - or - for WinNT4 ...\your local path to\IE5Setup.exe /C:"ie5wzd /e:IE4Shell_NTx86 /I:Y" (include proper drive & path to your local IE5setup.exe file of course) In principle, run the appropriate command from the machine requiring the upgrade with an open internet connection, it should acquire the needed file(s) and install. Hope this helps. Repost any follow-up to the group as appropriate. Max ----------------------------------- From: M. Officially, Win95/NT4 users can install the Desktop Update from IE4. How to Add or Remove Windows Desktop Update http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q165/6/95.asp As noted in KB Q165695, IE5/IE6 users must do this before an upgrade if they want to maintain this functionality. However, I have a better and safer method of installing ie5x on win95 with active desktop without having to install ie4: Execute the ie5setup.exe file and hold your horses. Open the file \temp\Ixp000.tmp\iesetup.cif file with a text editor. Change the UIVISIBLE entries in [IE4Shell_Win] and [IE4Shell_NTx86] from 0 to 1. Set all reboot values to 0. Save the altered file. Continue setup by agreeing to the licensing conditions. Tick the "Windows Desktop Update" (or similar) box in the "Minimal or custom installation" section. -------------------------------------------------- Hal -- Hal Hostetler, CPBE -- hhh@kvoa.com Senior Engineer/MIS -- MS MVP-DTS -- WA7BGX Subject: Re: Active Desktop, Windows 95 and IE4.x Date: Fri, 4 Jan 2002 00:20:50 -0700 From: "Bill James" Newsgroups: microsoft.public.win95.general.discussion References: Thanks, Hal.
