Special Needs Shelters

A Special Needs Shelter is not a mini-hospital or nursing home. It is a refuge for people who have specific needs that can be met in this type of setting. Most Special Needs Shelters have an emergency power generator that can provide power to run essential medical equipment such as oxygen delivery systems. No physician will be in the shelter.

Nurses are there to provide assistance only, not for providing all care. Clients are responsible for bringing their medical records, medications and medical supplies/equipment (including Depends, Chux, urinals, etc.)

Special Needs Shelters in PSA 1 include:

  • Pensacola Junior College in Escambia County
  • Sims Middle School in Santa Rosa County
  • Crestview High School in Okaloosa County
  • DeFuniak Springs Community Center in Walton County
  • If you have special needs and think you might need assistance evacuating your home in an emergency, call the number in your county to register for special needs evacuation:
