Although everyone
takes the path he or she makes through the universe, collaboration
has always been inherent to the spiritual path. The singular
trajectory of the individual is unique and indeed treasured for
its originality. The value of what each one of us knows about the
mystery of life shines like a thread in the tapestry of the
complex weave that unites all beings in that mystery.
In Invited Views we feature contributions
from authors who
explore and evaluate beliefs and bring insight to metahistorical issues such
as patriarchy, prehistory, indigenous wisdom, scientific materialism,
holism and healing. Posted 18 August 2004 "Metahistory: A Woman's
View," personal reflections Special Item Posted August 8: Exclusive to Metahistory.org: Thanks to Aulis Publishers (www.aulis.com),
we are able to include in Invited Views an article by
Colin Wilson on the extraordinary
achievement of Stan Gooch, whose Cities of Dreams figures
in the Seven Classics of
Metahistory. We anticipate presenting more features on and by
Stan Gooch in the near future. "A Beautiful Mind" by Colin Wilson The Latest Contributions Chapter One of Soulcraft by Bill Plotkin. Bill Plotkin, Ph.D., is a depth psychologist, wilderness guide, and a leader in the field of contemporary, nature-based personal development and initiation programs. He is founding director of Animas Valley Institute, a non-profit organization presenting nature-based soul-initiation programs since 1980. In this excerpt, Bill Plotkin looks deeply into the question of our "wisdom endowment" (as it is called in Metahistory): that is, the unique truth, passion, and wisdom born innately in each of us. He considers our great longing to connect with nature and, through that connection, to discover our hidden gift for humanity. www.animas.org"Paradigms: Intention Creating Reality," Chapter Three from Radical Knowing, second book of the "Radical" Trilogy by Christian de Quincey. "Transformation: Experience Beyond Belief," Chapter Four from Radical Knowing. In Radical Nature, first book of the "Radical" trilogy, Christian de Quincey, Managing Editor for the journal of The Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), proposes that the life-journey of each individual unfolds like a story, and is in fact a living, lived-out story. Consistent with the assumptions of Metahistory, he explains that the story is directed by our consciousness through constructs such as perceptions, beliefs and intentions. In these excerpts, he explores the central question "How do beliefs create reality?" Our first essay comes from the esteemed feminist scholar, Barbara Walker, who has spent over forty years unravelling and reconstructing many of the basic premises of our culture. Her work has made an inestimable contribution to restoring the feminine to the human story. Barbara is the author of dozens of books, including the highly acclaimed The Woman's Dictionary of Symbols and Sacred Objects. In 1993 she was named Humanist Heroine of the Year by the American Humanist Association. The essay below is taken from The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets. Motherhood was selected by Barbara in part in response to her reading of our Metahistory site, and in part in consideration of her role this fall in the Marion Foundation's Fall Conference Opening our Hearts to the Goddess.
Scaling the Cliff of Prehistory, Part One
Sky Gods and Earth Deities is from Metzners recent compilation of essays, Green Psychology (Park Street Press, Rochester, Vermont, 1999). It presents a clear and concise overview of beliefs attached to various masculine and feminine divinities in ancient cultures. Ralph Metzner, Ph.D. has been exploring states of consciousness and transformational practices for over thirty years. A teacher of courses on ecopsychology and altered states, he is the author of several books, including The Psychedelic Experience (with Leary and Alpert, 1964), Maps of Consciousness (1971), and most recently, The Unfolding Self. Dr. Metzner is co-founder and president of the Green Earth Foundation, an educational organization devoted to healing and harmonizing relations between humanity and the Earth.Delving into the belief-system of modern science, David Kubrin exposes the negation of feeling and perception demanded by its theorists and demonstrated by its practitioners. His concise and cogent essay helps to defuse errors and misconceptions around the belief that nature is purely mechanical. David is an escapee from Silicon Valley with a doctorate in the history of science. This essay (the first part of three related pieces) is from his unpublished book, "Marxism and Witchcraft" Wilhelm Reich by Michael Mannion This profile of pioneering physician-scientist Wilhelm Reich is contributed by Michael Mannion, author and co-founder of the Mindshift Institute, an organization devoted to challenging thinking, deepening emotions and opening possibilities. Their website, which contains life-positive information revealing how the present vision of reality is incomplete, is highly compatible with the aim and content of Metahistory.org.www.mindshiftinstitute.org Like Metahistory. org, the Mindshift Institute challenges the dominant worldview and aims to assist people in waking up from The Trance State, an unconscious but profound detachment from inner and outer reality. Blind attachment to belief is symptomatic of the Trance State. Michael Mannion shows that Reich's work was and still is a wake-up call for the human species.
