Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, today made the following remarks regarding the Senate vote to confirm John Roberts as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court:

“Today is a historic day not only for the Supreme Court -- but for our nation. I am pleased that my colleagues in the United States Senate joined together in a bipartisan fashion to confirm Judge John Roberts as Chief Justice. In my 11 years in the Senate, this is the first opportunity I have had to vote on a Supreme Court nominee, and I can think of no one more qualified and worthy to fulfill the role of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court than Judge Roberts.

“I had the privilege to meet with Judge Roberts shortly after President Bush nominated him to the Supreme Court. In our conversation he used terms such as “humility” and “modesty” when describing the role of a judge in the judicial process. As Chief Justice, I trust he will execute his duties with restraint, modesty, and humility as the Founders of our great nation intended.

“I was pleased to vote in favor of Judge Roberts today. I look forward to the President’s next nomination and trust that he will nominate another highly qualified individual.”
