Charty Chart Chat: Constantines Take Top Prize Tuesday November 01, 2005 @ 03:30 PM By: ChartAttack.com Staff
Never in the recent history of the Canadian campus radio charts have there been so many substantial Canadian albums competing for top honours. Not only are veteran chart toppers like Constantines, New Pornographers and Metric in the hunt for #1, but even newer underground faves like Wolf Parade, Broken Social Scene and have gotten in to the fray. Add underdogs like The Deadly Snakes and Fembots into the mix and you got yourself a regular chart donnybrook.
There's a new #1 this week as Constantines' Tournament Of Hearts jumps up one place to be crowned chart champ. After debuting at #1 last week, Broken Social Scene's eponymous release slips back to #2. Moving up one space into the #3 position is Wolf Parade's Apologies To The Queen Mary, followed by Metric's Live It Out, which jumps up three places. Controller.Controller's X-Amounts remains at #5 this week, while former #1 The New Pornographers' Twin Cinema slides down three spots to #6. They push The Deadly Snakes' Porcella to #7. Deerhoof's The Runners Four remains at #8. Finally, DangerDoom's The Mouse And The Mask and Fembots' The City flip-flop places and sit at #9 and #10, respectively.
The Campfire Headphase |
After a veritable feast of new entries last week (including three in the top 10), it's a more reserved debut for the top new debut. Boards Of Canada's The Campfire Headphase is the Chart Sizzler of the week, entering at #25, aided by it placing at the top on both the CFMU (McMaster) and CKMS (Waterloo) charts and sitting at #2 on the top 30 of CFRU (Guelph). The second highest new entry is My Morning Jacket's Z at #28, followed by The Maynards' Break Out The Make Out at #30 and Propagandhi's Potemkin City Limits at #32.
Underwater Cinematographer |
The Most Serene Republic's Underwater Cinematographer is in its 13th week on the chart at #33, but no other entry this week has been on in the top 50 for 10 weeks or more. With the explosion of new releases over the past several weeks, there are fewer chart veterans than usual.
Looking at the specialty charts, things have calmed down after a relatively turbulent early period in October. This week, four of the five charts have the same albums at #1 from last week. Thelonious Monk Quartet With John Coltrane At Carnegie Hall remains at #1 on the Jazz/Blues chart, while DangerDoom's The Mouse And The Mask is perched atop the Hip-Hop chart once again. Ladytron's Witching Hour spends a second week at #1 on the Electronic chart and Opeth's Ghost Reveries continues its (almost permanent) residence at the top of the Metal/Punk top 10. The only new #1 this week is the compilation, Rolas De Aztlán: Songs Of The Chicano Movement which moves up five places to capture #1 on the World/Folk chart.
