Carrie is an adoptive parent as well as a foster parent. She also understands adoption reunions. Carrie discovered several years ago, after the death of her mother, that her mother had had a child before her and had placed the infant for adoption. Carrie has met her sister and has a relationship with her today. Carrie feels really blessed to have another link to her mother through a new sister.
Experience:
Carrie has many experiences with children who are in the foster care system. She became interested in doing foster care while working in a childrens home where she witnessed many good kids waiting for foster homes. Carrie and her husband became foster parents in 1997, two months after the birth of their daughter. They have had several placements and adopted their three pre-teen/teen foster sons in November 2002.
Education:
Carrie holds a Bachelor's degree from the Wichita State University. She attends numerous trainings a year on a wide variety of subjects related to foster care and adoption. Carrie is also a certified Model Approach to Partnership in Parenting (MAPP) co-leader, this is the approved training for Kansas foster/adopt families. Carrie now trains others to be foster/adopt parents in MAPP and other classes she teaches.
From Carrie Craft:
I want to help my children grow, understand their pasts, forgive, and move on to be great. I hope that the work I do for About.com will help others learn about the system and find ways to make it better for kids and their families. I know that I have learned a lot.
