Act discriminatory, but no amendment

14/09/2005 16:22:06

The Prime Minister has given a commitment today not to amend the Marriage Act to allow gays to walk up the aisle.

Helen Clark has been campaigning in the Wellington region and at a Grey Power meeting in Kapiti she was asked whether marriage between a man and a woman would remain sacrosanct.

She says even though the Marriage Act is discriminatory it is not going to be changed because most people support it

Miss Clark says the Civil Union Act allows people of any gender to make a commitment to each other, which is a good thing.
