Current music:haha, 50 cent actually

Here is something which I don't believe has been posted before; I was just reminded of its existence about a half-hour ago and decided to crap up your friends page with it. It is a short comic done by Jamie Hewlett of Tank Girl fame which illustrates the lyrics to the Pulp classic "Common People" (recently covered by Canadian national hero William Shatner). These scans are not the best, but it's pretty cute; if you can't read the lettering the lyrics are available via any reputable search engine but I can post them if anyone who doesn't know the song already actually cares :-). I think all pop hits should have comic adaptations; in an ideal world I would have a copy of Rob Liefeld's Shake Ya Tailfeather: The Graphic Novel in a frame on my wall. This is an itsy-bitsy scan of the cover; the six interior pages are under the cut and much larger.

I think the only word to describe that is 'awesome'. Thanks for showing it.

Brilliant, brilliant stuff.

Was this done with Jarvis' blessing, or even at his behest? Or was it just something Hewlett did off his own back? Either way, it's great.

I guess it was probably commissioned, as I think it was included with some fancyass special edition "Common People" single. At the very least I don't suppose Hewlett was served with a cease and desist order for it, haha.

Hello.
That's brilliant! I'd like to see more Pulp songs done this way- Underwear, Party Hard and Minnie Timperley would be my choice.

Okay, here we go, from http://www.acrylicafternoons.com/rare.html, a Pulp fan-site:

"A fantastic promo item issued by Island in France which was included with some copies of the Common People CD. The comic illustrates the lyrics to the song Common People and also includes a Pulp discography. From what I've seen at CD fairs, it can sell for anything from 4 to 25 pounds, so watch out if you're trying to buy a copy of it - you'll also have to pay more for a shrink wrapped copy which includes the Common People CD."

Looks like it is none too easy to come by a physical copy, but there are also smaller but better quality scans on this page for those who wanna get they icon on!

It's funny, Jamie Hewlett also did a one-off strip in Time Out about Jarvis Cocker.

Wasn't up to his usual standards though; this is much, much better...

the comic is allright.. though from knowing the lyrics i never realy got the idea that the comon person would be depicted as a high fashion mod person. that seems more akin to the rich bratty art school girl in the song. maybe it's a british thing i don't understand..

She's a rich bratty art school girl slumming it with common people (working class), it's not too different from hipsters going to dive bars and drinking pabst.

And in one of those 'life imitating art' moments, the girl in the video was played by Sadie Frost, who is most famous for being a talentless media whore, sometime drug user and one time other half of Jude Law.

But the narrator of the song isn't a common person, she's just stupid enough to think he is.
