Black Opal is a new and exciting
3-year leadership development initiative designed to prepare
you for life after university by nurturing your potential,
developing your skills and giving you plenty of opportunities
to use them.
Black Opal is currently looking for senior undergraduate / postgraduate students for Facilitator and Coordination positions within the program for 2006 Click Here for details.
Why Do You Need This?
Year 1 is about preparing you through
mentoring, team building, leadership workshops, community
service projects, career planning, personality profiling,
leadership readings, journalling, social events etc.
Year 2 is about both leadership theory
with heaps of practical experience through a leadership theme
of your choice: Adventure-Eco, Arts-Culture, Business-Entrepreneurial,
Social Change, Global Stewardship & Spiritual Leadership.
Year 3 is about you stepping up and
leading in one of three major teams: the 1st Year Mentoring
Team, the Community Impact Team, or the Leadership Conference
Team. You step into Work Experience, are Mentored by Leaders
in the Community, and you can apply for exchange to the University
of Arizona and be a part of Blue Chip.
Black Opal is founded on its sister program
CHIP, run by the Center for Student Involvement
and Leadership at the University of Arizona in the US. Terry
Thompson, the program's creator, and the rest of the Blue
Chip team have formed a Global Leadership Partnership with
the CSD and have generously provided Black Opal with all their
resources. We thank them for their faith and trust in this
unique leadership collaboration.
Myths We Want to Shatter!
#1. Black Opal requires a lot of time
and will interfere with my study and work commitments...WRONG
We have students who commute from Sydney, are doing
double degrees and work part time jobs who have easily coped
with Black Opal. Most importantly they have found that Black
Opal has given them the support network and systems to handle
everything that university life has thrown at them. Black
Opal will take commitment, but that's what leadership is about.
#2. Black Opal is expensive and costs
lots of money...WRONG
You pay a fee of around $275 per semester which covers
pretty much everything in Black Opal. You pay around 20% of
your total program cost, the rest is shared by the University
of Wollongong, UniCentre and Corporate Sponsors. An additional
cost may come in 3rd year if you decide to apply for exchange
to the Arizona Blue Chip Leadership Program in the US, but
we even subsidise that!
#3. Black Opal is just about Leadership,
that's too narrow...WRONG
The 3 year program is focused on leadership but develops many
areas of your life, just look at the program outline for years
1 through 3!
