Finnish police may approach unruly citizens via text message. For example in Salo, the cradle of the Finnish mobile phone industry, police have adopted the practise of sending motorists text messages into their mobile phones about for example faulty lights. Also the highest echelons of the Finnish police administration wtry to think of ways in which the technology could be utilised to a greater extent than now.

In its current form, the police guidelines on reprimanding say it must happen either orally or in writing on the spot. Surveys suggest written forms have a great effect. The form also identifies what exactly the person has done wrong.

Police administration wants to make absolutely sure that the right person gets the text message. Also the person receiving the message must be sure it really was sent by the police.
