Editorials and Commentary from the Nation’s Leading Liberal Arts Colleges

This section of Collegenews.org contains editorials and commentaries on a variety of topics, with previously published op-eds and opinion pieces, printed transcripts of noteworthy speeches, smaller versions of occasional papers, and reprinted articles from a number of sources.

Many of these address the challenges facing residential liberal arts colleges and American higher education in general. Others point to the unique contributions of Annapolis Group institutions and dispute many of the misperceptions held about the role liberal arts colleges have in today’s world. Among the many subjects considered are: Why have liberal arts colleges become a model for successful undergraduate science education? How does liberal learning better prepare graduates for the workforce of today and twenty years from now? Does the residential campus still have relevancy in an age of distance learning? Still others provide insight on stories on the nightly news, from Iraq to presidential elections to reforming social security.

The editorials and commentaries are organized into three broad groups. The first two, “Liberal Learning and Residential Liberal Arts Colleges” and “Issues in Higher Education,” focus on education. The third category, “Topics in the News,” offers editorials and commentaries related to current events and issues of national importance.

The diversity of voices, topics, and opinions found in these editorials and commentaries speak to the continuing vitality and importance of the residential liberal arts college community and its contributions to higher education and society.
