I'm looking for a list of fonts (mainly from 60's to the 70's) created by VGC (Visual Graphics Corporation, makers of the Typositor)

Include only fonts created by VGC. DO NOT include those marketed by VGC, but originated by other foundries (such as ITC or ATF). (Unless, it is a special version--such as shaded--peculiar to VGC.)

(VGC's most famous font, I'd say, has to be the original 1965 version of Friz Quadrata.)

If possible, I'd also like to know the designer and/or year of release.

Ron, here is a list of VGC issued designs that I have used for years. It is part of Tim Ryan's Typeface NameBase project that he compiled during the early 90s. I have only provided the typeface names here, but you grab a tab-delimited text file from my server which also includes the designer and year of release for each face. I cannot vouch for 100% accuracy, but it's the best I've got.

I hope this helps.

Other VGC fonts I know of:

Jana (1965)

Lee (late 60's/early 70's)
---most familiar as the font used in the VHS logo. Lee Bold was used as the titling font on the TV series "Charlie's Angels".

Rodin (circa 1974)

I've just spotted an error:

The online text file lists an incorrect date of 1976 for the "Trooper Roman" font. I have a typeface book with a *1974* copyright that includes Trooper Roman.

No one's mentioned Pistilli Roman, either. My suggestion is it's worth the effort to get your hands on actual VGC catalogs or promotion material, if you're aiming for a definitive list.

Like I said before, I never promised a definitive listing. And I concur with Peter that obtaining a VGC catalog or two might shed a better light when trying to find the stragglers. However, I have several VGC books and no single one of them lists the typeface, release date and designer as comprehensively as the Typeface NameBase listing I provided.

I'm afraid that this stuff is scattered hither and yon.

Very true, Grant. Plus, one catalog lists "VGC Award Winning Alphabets", "VGC Original Designer Alphabets", and "VGC Original Alphabets". Unfortunately the distinction between exclusive-to-VGC and licensed-to-VGC typefaces is nowhere explained clearly in their material.

Looking for anything from VGC on eBay might be a little tricky. On eBay, the abbreviation "VGC" is usually used to mean "very good condition".

Your best bets are university or research libraries, and used booksellers, both online and in person. Look for "Alphabet Library" by Visual Graphics Corporation, or VGC Corp. Latest edition I've seen is the 15th, copyright 1990. Hope this helps.

Seeing Phillippe's list reminded me of an article in the December 1972 issue of Industrial Arts Methods I have in my possession which has an article about VGC. It list some of their exclusive designs with short profiles of their designers. Presumably, these were the most recent releases as of 1972, but it doesn't say. Some of these have already been mentioned, but here is the list and their designers:

Soul (Light, Medium, Bold, Open) - Jerry Matejka
Governale Tempo (Plain, Open, Open & Shade) - Sandi Governale
Aquarius (2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, Outline) - Ronald Arnholm
Lee (Regular, Bold, Italic) - Leo Weisz
Précis Slim - Arthur L. Rawn
Serpentine (Light, Medium, Bold, Bold Italic) - Dick Jensen (who looks just like Drew Carey)
Roslyn Gothic (Medium, Bold, Outline) - Harry Winters
Wexford (Light, Medium, Bold) - Richard A. Sclatter
Venture - Harry L. Villhardt
Skin & Bones - Douglas F. Jones (who looks just like Sonny Bono)

The article mentions that VGC held its first type design contest in 1965.

A VGC catalog I have from 1973 list a few more exclusives that have not been mentioned so far:

Baker Sans (12 weights/styles) - presumably by Arthur Baker - it's possible this was not an exclusive design--there is no TM or R after the name
Continental (Regular, Italic, Black)
Daisyland
Eight Ball (Regular, Open)
Gerstner Program (13 weights/styles)
Huit (Light, Medium, Medium Italic, Bold) - Michel and Roselyne Besnard - also not sure if this was exclusive
Karolys (Romain, Italique) - not sure if this was exclusive
L&C Hairline - Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase (but never part of the ITC library)
Moore Swash
Primus - again, not sure if this was exclusive
Sintex 1
Skylark
L&C Stymie Hairline - Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase (but never part of the ITC library)

It also lists some "last minute" additions which haven't been mentioned yet:

Bessellen
Pisa
Stan Control (No. 1, No. 2, No. 3)
Stan Compromise (No. 1, No. 2)
Stan Conform

in keeping ‘accuracy’ fulfilled:

Aquarius 1968
Arrow late ’60s
Baker Danmark 1970
Book Jacket Italic (was only made in italic)
Eightball · Phil Martin 1971
Harry 1967
Stan Control, Stan Compromise, Stan Conform · Stanley Davis c. 1975
Trooper Roman · Dave Trooper (fuller than D.)

Moore Swash was listed in the ‘Library’ with Times Roman Bold

I worked for TGC (TypoGraphics Communications), which was a successor to Rapid Typographers, from 1976 to 1984 (when it folded). It was a ‘sister’ company to VGC (Visual Graphics Corporation) where, from Rapid’s type racks, repro proofs were pulled for the first Typositor fonts (actual metal type -- before designers got to get rid of the intervening steps).
One classical booboo survived -- the VGC Bembo (not the Castcraft one) had a Baskerville lowercase ‘g’ that was used (even in the New York Times) and never fixed.

Stan Control, Stan Compromise, Stan Conform · Stanley Davis c. 1975

That couldn't have been designed later than 1973--it's listed in the catalog I have dated "8/73" in small type on the back cover. Unless, of course, that number is not really a date.

Eightball · Phil Martin 1971

That's funny--I never noticed that he had done any fonts for VGC.

I remember that! I think it even made it into one company's rub-down sheets (Chartpak?) that used VGC fonts for their source art.

[ Funny too, just the last month I was playing around a little with the Eightball for something that finally didn't work, but thought was a cool one, couldn't find it as digital though. ]

Bump the thread. In Ebay, there is an auction of a VGC catalogue. here

Mark mentioned, & I'd like to add:

Karolys (Romain, Italique) - not sure if this was exclusive
- says VGC exclusive in my promo sheet, by Alain Simon, no date help here

L&C Hairline - Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase (but never part of the ITC library)
-this was pre-Avant Garde, at least around c.1966.

Sintex 1
- Aldo Novarese, but y'all knew that

Other rare creatures of film:
Rotalic, 2 wts. w/swash (Ursula Seuss/exclusive)
Fovea, various wts. (Ronald Arnholm?)
Eastern Souvenir, 3 wts. (Martin Solomon, post-ATF, pre-ITC)
Rodin & its worse Cold War-era spinoff Rodin Cyrillic

thank you Mark for putting Stanley Davis series (listed as about 1975) back to 1973

Eightball was digitized by FontBank as Egbert

I didn't mention that at TGC when I worked there the day foreman was Jay Schechter (“Jay Gothic”). He was there from 1966 to the close (1984). I don't think he sold any fonts after that first series (he was 21 when he designed it). He was one of the judges of type for VGC and later for ITC. After TGC he worked for Characters (which also bought up the fonts from Techni·Plus) until that closed (approx. 1992). Nothing but rumors abounded as to where all the fonts ended up (Connecticut?).

Thanks for the clue Phillipe (missing the cool alternates for the lowercase though).

In a letraset catalog Flyer Bold and Flyer Bold Condensed are shown as VGC's too.

Both of the VGC Flyers were lifted from Filmotype (C-4 & C-2). Later they were “updated” to Chicago Sans Serif & Toronto Sans Serif.
