SAM RYAN

2003

Sam Ryan joined ESPN, Inc. in 2003, serving as sideline reporter for ESPN and ESPN2’s coverage of the National Hockey League playoffs, including the Stanley Cup Finals on ESPN and ABC.   In 2004, she added reporting duties for ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball telecasts, joining the award-winning team of Jon Miller and Joe Morgan.  Ryan has also served as a college football sideline reporter for ABC since September 2002.

Prior to joining ESPN and ABC Sports, Ryan worked as a sports anchor and reporter for ABC’s New York affiliate.  In addition to her WABC-TV experience, she has also reported for WFAN radio, News 12 Long Island, WVIT Hartford, CT, and Fox Sports Net New York, where she served as a reporter and anchor for the “New York Sports Report.”

During her career, Ryan has reported on many diverse sporting events, including the 1996 Summer Olympics (ABC Radio Network), the 2000 Subway Series between the Yankees and the Mets (FOX Sports N.Y. and MSG), the Chase Championship Tennis Tournament (FOX Sports), the N.Y. City Cycling Championship (WABC) and women’s college basketball (FOX Sports).

She won a local Emmy award in 1999 for “Outstanding Series Feature-soft” and garnered a local AP award in 2000.

In addition to her on-air work, Ryan, who enjoys teaching, has taught a class at Hofstra University. She also enjoys running and is currently a member of the New York Road Runners Club.

Ryan was born in Port Jefferson, New York, and grew up on Long Island. She was encouraged to pursue a career in television by her mentor, Baseball Hall of Fame broadcaster and News 12 Long Island Sports Director Bob Wolff.

Ryan and her husband, Jeff, currently reside in Bay Terrace, New York, with their son, Nicklaus.
