Interview with International
Master P Magesh Chandran – By R R Vasudevan (July 24)
A student of Telecommunication Engg @ University of Texas and Dallas,
USA this industrious boy from Madurai, India packed a punch and
is leading the 26th Asian Junior Chess Championships at Negombo
with a 6.5/8 score. With three rounds remaining, it surely offers
Magesh the right opportunity to hit the jackpot. Playing with a
highly respectable Elo of 2419, Magesh happens to be the son of
a leading Anesthetist Dr Panchanathan. Coached by National “A”
player V Hariharan during his stay in India, Magesh currently trains
with IM Rade Milnovich.
About today’s game against Deepan Chakkravarthy ?
It was a Ruy Lopez Chigorin where Deepan went for the attack, leading
to an unclear position. There he sacrificed a knight but could not
make a big headway and lost.
Do you see yourself closer to the title at 6.5/8 , what
was your preparation for this event ?
Not sure. Some players are quite close by me. Prior to this event,
I attended
the Grandmaster Vladimirov camp in Calicut. It was very good, and
the time was limited to 3 hrs a day. But the work out he gave was
very helpful. Goodricke 2002 was my last tournament and camp was
very useful.
Do you have any surprise plans for the next three rounds
?
Play normal chess and maybe win the title
Will becoming an Asian Junior Champion further your sponsorships
in USA ?
There are chances, University of Texas and Dallas allot some money
per year and depending upon my show it can increase.
You are on a sports scholarship, but what about academics
?
Strictly, I am expected to complete my grades, with necessary GPA
(Grade point average), and I have to score 3 out of 4 every semester
to maintain the scholarship.
What are your next events ?
I have to look for some tournaments. Maybe, some time after I return
to USA after mid August.
How do you plan to improve your rating and go the Grandmaster
Norm ?
As I am in USA, basically I have to tap some private tournaments
and some closed event invitations, to meet my targets. Maybe, I
have to travel Europe, with the allowance that I get in Texas and
try obtaining the Norms.
On your preparation ?
Right now I don’t have any preparing partners in the Campus
and I have to work on it. GM Yuri Shulman is from my University
and GM Kempinski, IM Amon Simutowe, IM Dmitry Schneider are my team
members.
What are your commitments to University of Texas and Dallas
?
I’ve to play the Pan American Team Championship, where the
final four will play among themselves for the title. UMBC is the
strongest team with all four GMs.
On your future plans ?
I plan to become a Grandmaster, and I’ve given myself two
years for that.
Who’s your favorite player ?
Bobby Fischer and Vishy Anand.
Do you like Sri Lanka ?
It’s my first visit to this country and I am enjoying a lot.
If I win the event it will be a double bonus.
Wishing u good luck for the event !
Thank you !!
