The Mind Sports Olympiad MSO Events
The MSO Worldwide site is brought to you by the people who run the Mind Sports Olympiad on behalf of the Mind Sports Council. Learn more about our flagship event.

We are delighted to announce that MSO 10 is going to happen in 2006 from Friday August 18th to Monday August 28th inclusive.

Acting upon the many comments we received from a number of participants (and non-participants) at MSO 9, we have decided to revert to our original method of charging per game/session and thus abandoning the link of participation fees with accommodation fees.

As this will be our TENTH MSO we intend to have some "birthday" events to celebrate our first decade. Look out for some old events coming back and some new ones coming in.

Send us any suggestions before 31st December at entries@msoworld.com and look on this site for the schedule shortly afterwards.

We do hope that you will join / re-join us again to make the event a friendly, competitive event.

The Ninth Mind Sports Olympiad

takes place between 19-29 August 2005 in Manchester.

The 9th Mind Sports Olympiad takes place from Friday August 19th to Monday August 29th inclusive in its new permanent home at the Renold Building at Manchester Conference Centre. This year, we are proud to take place in collaboration with the British Historical Games Society's Britcon Olympiad event, featuring the UK National Championships for a number of different periods.

For the 9th Mind Sports Olympiad we are adopting the successful event model of the British Historical Games Society, whose "Britcon" event now forms part of the MSO. The concept is to combine the tournament entry and accommodation booking processes, making your life and ours easier. This concept encourages more participants to stay in the inexpensive accommodation made available by the University of Manchester, thereby creating more of a convention atmosphere during the event. This accommodation is within 1-2 minutes walk of all the playing rooms.

The principal changes from past years are:

1. We have added a number of tournaments to the schedule on weekdays, to provide more playing opportunities for our participants. Nubble! and Triolet tournaments added. (New! 26th July: MSO-Con entry form and stratego tournament details added.)

2. The tournament schedule and the scale of charges for entries and accommodation encourage participation in more playing sessions each day. If you enter for an event that involves only 1 or 2 playing sessions on a particular day, you may also enter, without any extra charge for that day, for other events that have play on that day. This system gives participants the opportunity to try new games and to participate in more tournaments at no extra charge.

3. We are strongly encouraging participants at the 9th MSO to book an "entry and accommodation" package that includes accommodation at the University of Manchester, on the playing site. This arrangement guarantees to all participants the benefits of very economical living accommodation. By making the event largely residential we hope to increase the social aspects of the MSO. The most economical accommodation is in single rooms at the student residence halls. There is also 3-star hotel accommodation available on site, but space in the hotel is limited so book early if you prefer the hotel option.

4. Participants may opt out of the "entry and accommodation" package if they wish, and pay only the "Non-resident competitors" rate. This still allows participation in as many tournaments as you wish on any of the days for which you are registered, morning, afternoon and evening.

5. We are introducing "MSOCON", a separate event that caters for enthusiasts of what we previously called "Hobby Games". This includes: Acquire, Age of Steam, Carcassonne, Lost Cities, Puerto Rico and Settlers of Catan. Participants in MSOCON pay an all-in fee of £20 which allows them to compete in as many of the MSOCON tournaments as they wish. Any MSO9 participant who has one or two unallocated playing sessions on a day when they are already participating, may take part without any extra charge in a MSOCON tournament on that day. Any MSOCON participant must pay the normal MSO9 entry fee if they also wish to participate in tournaments outside of MSOCON. MSOCON entries must be made on the separate MSOCON entry form.

6. Entries for the various MSO Bridge tournaments must be made on the separate MSO Bridge entry form.

  • We have directions for finding the venue.
  • Snacks, sandwiches, confectionery and beverages on a cash basis adjacent to the largest playing hall.
  • Spectators are welcome and there will be no charge made.
The second MSO Schools event will place on July 16th and 17th, featuring the Northern finals of the UK Chess Challenge and the second UK Schools Quiz and Intelligence Championships. The qualifiers for the Schools Quiz and Intelligence Championships are available.
