Bull Terrier 1 Porcupine 0.
Inca, The Guinness' aunt, is doing alright after her run in with a Porcupine May 23. Thousands of quills were embedded even in her tongue. The vets worked for quite some time to get quills out and even still could not get them all. The one's that are left will work themselves out over time.

Inca is home and on antibiotics and pain killers.
Ouch!

That poor pooch...that's f'ing insane! I can't imagine the pain she must have been in.

I'd be curious to see pictures of her after the quills were removed and curious to know what the vet bill was?

Oh, the poor dog!

We had a runin with one with Damon, but not nearly that bad.

Did they put her out while they removed them? I hope....

That's some disturbing photography!

I remember our dog having quills, when I was a kid, but never anything that extreme. There's one bald porcupine walking around somewhere...

Looks to me like Inca didn't give up until it turned the porky inside out!

Yeah I think she was put out while they did that.
And the cost was considerable but my breeder has insurance that covers things like this so there was no question about money.

The porcupine actually came up near the house and so they are testing it for rabies, It didn't walk away from this one I'm afraid. They are concerned as it is peculiar for a procupine that is mature as this one was to go wandering up near a house with three dogs. The two others had sense not to get involved and were not quilled. Inca on the other hand, I guess took it personally.

These little guys are resilient and obviously stubborn. She'll be fine in a couple of weeks.

This is Inca before the quilling.

Aw that poor darlin! Talk about a spike hairdo!

My dobie Doobie would tie into one every year. Always seemed to happen around this time of year, too. Stupid dog never did learn to leave them animals alone. One time, he brought home the hind quarters of a porcupine. The idiot made a meal of it. Quills all the way down his throat. Back in the seventies it was somewhere under a couple hundred smackers at the vet's to have him sedated and operated on. There were a few the vet was unable to get at.

I just told Alpha-B the other day about another time I was with some buds at a resort up north a hundred miles from the nearest vet when he tied into another porcupine sometime after we were all peakin on cid. That was some ordeal we put him (and he put us) through while 3 guys held him down while I pulled them spikes out of him one by one with a pair of needle-nose pliers. What a trip to doggy hell!

OMG! !!!!!

Poor Puppy!

I dont know what I would of done if it had been my dog. I would of been shitting myself on what to do and how exactly to physically handle the dog.

Im very happy to hear poohie will be okay after a bit of rest.

It is strange the pork would just wander up to the house like that. Perhaps someones been leaving food out for it so it just thought house=free meal

Glad she'll be alright in a few weeks....poor baby.
Fingers crossed that the porky wasn't rabed.

Best wishes to Inca and co.

Holy shit! I've never seen anything like that.
The quills look like toothpicks...in fact, she looks like an hors d'oeuvre dish.

Poor thing. Hope she recovers prickly...er...quickly. [Wink]

OWNED!!!

Poor things.

Fucking ouch times ten, I imagine.

Reminds me of the three times our Dachshund's been mauled by coyotes.

Little fucker's still going strong. Almost got her throat torn out once and couldn't bark for two months.

Dogs are tough mu'fuckas, apparently.

What did it do, run through the porcupine's entire extended family get together, tongue open?

Jesus. Poor fucking dog. It's gonna be in a lot of pain for a long time to come. Wouldn't it have been more humane just to put it down?

I dunno. Inca is on pain meds to get over the initial hump here. But I think that the breeder and the vet would know enough to make the right call there. They pulled and cut out what they could and I guess time will tell.

These little doggies are a tough lot though and have the ability to disregard lot of pain. In my opinion that ability is only out done by their stubbornness.

She has a new boy friend "Rocky" and I wonder if she just was showing off for him. [Roll Eyes]

Ouch. I had always thought that PitBulls were a smarter breed. That would be something I would expect from a less inteligent dog (like Fred).

I think putting the dog down would be an extreme reaction. Can you imagine if you got in a car accident and a doctor saying 'well he has 100 broken bones and will be in a lot of pain, lets just put him down'. In 2 weeks, she will be back to attacking more porcupines. Or maybe she will graduate to skunk. [Smile]

You should give 30c of Silica 1x a day. Crush to a power and don't touch or use medal. Put it in the mouth. Give one hour before meal or one hour after and keep the dog quite for an hour or longer.
This will take up to 3 weeks but you will have all the quills come out. Also give yoghurt everyday so there will be good bact. The antibiotics kill the good and the bad.

You get Silica in Heath food stores. Your dog will be better off if you do. [Big Grin]

Heh heh not surprising really with the amount of quills, it was bound to get passed around a lot. Still hurts looking at those pics. I have an email I should have replied to from her so I'll ask about an update on Inca's condition.

Is that a regular thing to do once or so a year Sylvia or just if he's quilled? My wife told me about yogurt a while about and it makes sense doesn't it?
