Operation QUADRANT
June 1999 - September 2002
Operation QUADRANT was Canada's overall participation in international
missions in Kosovo. It began on June 10, 1999, when the UN Security Council authorized
the establishment of an interim civilian administration in the province, headed
by UN officials and designed to move the Kosovar people toward substantial autonomy.
It ended in September 2002, when the last Canadian Forces officer serving with
the UN Mission Interim Administration in Kosovo returned to Canada.
Working closely with Kosovo's leaders and people, the UN mission performs the
whole spectrum of essential administrative functions and services, working in
areas such as health, education, finance, communications, and law and order. The
new Constitutional Framework of Kosovo was adopted in May 2001, and province-wide
elections were held in November 2001.
