December Bootie

Obj7geo51pg1p7 San Francisco mash-up club Bootie is back again this Saturday, December 10th, 2005. This month's guest is local DJ Jay-R, the production mastermind behind the mash-up hit My Other Car is a Beatle (as featured on The Best Mashups In The World Ever Are From San Francisco). Be sure and check out his dance music podcast, too!

Jay-R will of course be joined by Bootie residents Adrian, the Mysterious D, Dada, and Party Ben. And in the backroom, it's Madonna mash-ups all night long. There will also be giveaways of Party Ben's controversial Dean Gray American Edit album. It's like banned and stuff, ya know!

The Cherry Bar & Lounge is located at 917 Folsom (@ 5th) in the beautiful city of San Francisco, California. Doors open at 9 pm and close at 2 am. $5 before 10 pm, $8 after.

Bootle.gs Launched

Bootle.gs allows mashup artists and DJs to create a short, custom URL for their site or file. Kind of like a tinyurl.com for bootleggers. If only they would add a browse feature so we can see all the URLs that have been submitted!

Coldcut Remix Contest

Here's your opportunity to remix the godfathers of mash-up. Software maker Ableton is sponsoring a remix contest for Coldcut's new single Everything is Under Control. Contest closes January 6th, 2006. Source files and more information are available at the Ableton web site.

Cease & Desist: The Album

Ceaseanddesist Check out Morgan Page's Cease & Desist, a white-label house music album featuring 100% unauthorized music versions of popular tracks from artists including David Bowie, Esthero, Sam Phillips, The Kills, and Wax Poetic feat. Norah Jones. For a limited time, he's making it available on his web site as a free download.

Morgan’s tracks have been featured in national campaigns for national brands including Adidas, Subterranean, Arden B, Nike, Chanel, and Nine West. Tracks from this remix album are reportedly getting airtime on KCRW, Indie 103, Power 106, Thump Radio, Proton Radio, Sirius, and XM. I've heard the whole album -- it's amazing. My favorite is the Tegan & Sara remix.

Here's the tracklisting:

  1. Esthero - "We Are In Need of a Music Revolution" (Intro edit)
  2. Coldplay - "White Shadows" (Morgan Page Bootleg Remix)
  3. Tegan & Sara - "Walking With a Ghost" (Morgan Page Bootleg Remix)
  4. Imogen Heap - "Hide & Seek" (Morgan Page Bootleg Remix)
  5. Sam Phillips - "If I Could Write" (Morgan Page Bootleg Remix)
  6. The Kills - "Good Ones" (Morgan Page Bootleg Remix)
  7. Hiperboreal - "Tijuana For Dummies" (Morgan Page Bootleg Remix)
  8. David Bowie - "New Killer Star" (Morgan Page Bootleg Remix)
  9. Antone Dvorak - "Symphony ..9" (Morgan Page Remix)
  10. Wax Poetic feat. Norah Jones - "Angels" (Morgan Page Remix)

Go download it!

Dean Gray Tuesday

In response to the cease & desist order from Warner lawyers, supporters of the American Edit project are organizing Dean Gray Tuesday, an online protest modeled after Danger Mouse's Grey Tuesday. Their plan is to organize volunteer web sites to donate bandwidth and distribute the album on December 13th, 2005 in an act of protest. See the web site for more details.

Album Cover Mash-Up

Mash-up art -- kind of like a Where's Waldo album cover.

American Edit Gets Cease and Desist

Rumor has it that Party Ben and Team9's American Edit Green Day mash-up project got the cease-and-desist smack down from Warner after only 7 days online. No worries, though. It appears to be alive and well on BitTorrent.

Radiohead Remixed

Radiohead fans will certainly enjoy Me and This Army, a Radiohead remix and mash-up album produced by DJ Panzah Zandahz (say that 10 times fast!). Although he seems to be trying to sell it on his web site, there are plenty of other places to download it as detailed in this Boing Boing posting.

DRM Provider Pledges to Break Apple's FairPlay DRM

I think DRM sucks, and I applaud any attempt to thwart it. It has to make you wonder, though, when one provider pledges to break another's DRM scheme. That's right -- DRM provider Navio "has pledged to hack Apple’s FairPlay digital rights management technology, and provide that hack to online music retailers." Gosh, even the digital rights management camp gets pissed when they are locked out of something. Sucks, doesn't it?

Turntable As Musical Instrument

Here's an interesting twist on the tried-and-true DJ turntable: special buttons which pitch a record up and down the right number of semitones to allow the precise "playing" of the 12 note western music scale. DJs have been doing this for years with a careful ear and the standard pitch slider, but it is kind of cool to see this integrated right into the turntable.

Web blog Gagged Truth has posted information on scouring MP3 content from hosting services like megaupload.com. Another great trick to add to your Google scouring arsenal!

Mashuptown Calls It Quits

"The time has come to shut down this site," says Mashuptown.com site operator. Mashuptown was a great music blog and podcast that featured 100% bootlegs and mashups. I'm not certain the reasons for abandoning the project, but I can only hope that they have nothing to do with legal troubles. In any case, you'll be missed!

Mixxx: The Open Source DJ System

Mixxx is a digital DJ system that works on all major desktop operating system, including Windows XP, OS X, and Linux. The open source software includes features such as beat estimation, parallel visual displays, and support for DJ input controllers. It can handle MP3, Ogg Vorbis, Wave and Aiff sound formats. For controller automation, Mixxx supports MIDI and standard input devices such as joysticks and mice. It looks to be somewhat comparable to Traktor, minus the hefty price tag. I personally use Rane Serato Scratch Live -- which I'm perfectly happy with -- but I'm definitely interested in learning about alternatives. Have any readers out there tried Mixxx?

Green Day Mash-Up Album Released

DeangraycoverI was wondering why I was hearing so much Green Day on tonight's Sixx Mixx -- turns out the entire hour was devoted to American Edit, a new Green Day mash-up album released by "Dean Gray." It's pretty obvious though that the Dean Gray moniker is a collaboration between team9 and Party Ben. Hope that wasn't supposed to be a secret or something. Anyways, it's a great album and I highly encourage you to download it!

Adam Curry Says No More Mash-Ups

Adam Curry has always been a big supporter of mash-ups, featuring them prominently on his Daily Source Code podcast. As of November 11, 2005, Adam will no longer include non-podsafe music in his broadcast. This means no more mash-ups.

He's "gotten religion," says WebJay author and blogger Lucas Gonze. Adam expects a European shakedown over non-licensed music in podcasts soon. Rather than be made an "example," he's going to do his part to make the current big label business model "irrelevant."

Listen to the announcement on Adam's November 11, 2005, Daily Source Code podcast.
