"9 Patriotic Battle Hymns" CD (Kill Rock Stars) - Sam McPheeters and Adam Woodrow formed BORN AGAINST in late 1988, but it took 21/2 years and two wars before they made their first LP. Of the band's many foibles and travails, one lesson endures: Hysteria Sells. CD comes with 20 page booklet and includes 1993's "Battle Hymns" 10", 17 tracks total. Reissued on KRS in 2002. $10.
"The Rebel Sound Of Shit & Failure" CD (Kill Rock Stars) - A posthumous collection of 24 live, rare, compilation, 7" and 8" tracks, with a 16 page booklet of photos, lyrics and liner notes. The wit and bile of this nutty New Jersey hardcore band is appropriate for teen hobos and tenured academics alike. Re-released on KRS in 2002. $14.
split 7" (Gravity) Four songs total from 1993, both bands sharing the Headley / Joy rhythm section. Except for the UOA side, where Tonie played guitar. Graphics could've been better, but you'll have no complaints with the music. $3
"Jawbone Of An Ass" CD (Vermiform) - Lungcast issued this in '91 and Vermiform repressed in '96. Yes, ok, noise. But not the motionless-men-on-a-stage-with-laptops variety. B.I.T.H. were more about plausible soundscapes, like being taken on a tour through one of the great Cunard ocean liners. You may see some fantastic staterooms and dining halls, but sooner or later you'll have to descend to those boiler rooms. $10
CD (Vermiform) - This first album by Los Angeles enigma FF was also the last record released on Vermiform. This is merely a new wave record in the same way that Jane Fonda was merely a fitness guru. 7" (Vermiform) - For several months before and after this was released, Vermiform fielded a rash of inquiries, all wondering why the label would traffic in surf. These questions have persisted even into the 21st century, now taking the form of several thousand unsold 7"s. "Crashing Down" 7" (Vermiform) At two hours from Manhattan, Albany, NY has always had something of a proximity problem, its great bands (BLOTTO, CAPITLE [sic], FIT FOR ABUSE) overshadowed by the world just down I-87. Hardcore band HAIL MARY struggled against this obscurity for half a decade, putting up a valiant fight against unremitting comparisons to BORN AGAINST. Art by Neil Burke. $3.

"Gasoline T-Shirt" LP (Lungcast) - The inner journey of Neil Burke - begun at MENACE DEMENT and abruptly terminated at MEN'S RECOVERY PROJECT - took a severe turn towards narcotics in the early '90's. On this 1993 album, Burke offers nine tracks of proudly psychedelic rock jams with members of MISSING FOUNDATION. Listen carefully and you can actually smell drugs. $8.
S/t LP (Gravity) - As a west coast chapter of a small but significant hardcore revival in the early 1990's, San Diego's HEROIN produced only one full length (originally released as a split with Vermiform). Although time has diluted their direct influence - members went on to ANTIOCH ARROW and CLIKATAT IKATOWI -very little has been done to hose down the viciousness of their actual recordings. $8.
"All About Heroin" 7" (Vinyl Communications). Debut EP, 1991, 6 songs. Their least impressive recording, which is still a bit like saying "Abe Lincoln's shittiest speech". These guys were titans. $3
"Everything's Happening" CD (Vermiform) - In a clever bit of camouflage, the best record on Vermiform was also the worst packaged. What appears to be a harmless bit of collegiate alt-rock is actually a vengeful freak attack from members of SIX FINGER SATELLITE, M.R.P., PINK & BROWN and THE COACHWHIPS. When you overhear someone mention 'the Providence sound' at a party, this is the band whose name you should be shrieking as you club that person into unconsciousness with an ashtray. $10.

"Lucky" 7" (Lungcast) - Neil Burke released this single in 1992 and it's a safe bet that some drugs were smoked in the process. Although formed by members of CRUCIFIX and PUSSY GALORE, LOUDSPEAKER weren't particularly uppity in any direction, opting for a slower form of plod. $3.
"Heartbeeps" CD (5RC). Summer 2005. Ten tracks, cover art by McPheeters. The best live band in Los Angeles. In the upcoming Darby Crash biopic, these guys play THE SCREAMERS. $10
"Sum Of The Men" LP (Vermiform) - This 1991 album marked the dawn of 'west coast power violence', a fresh hybrid of thrash, prog and noise. With members of PILSBURY HARDCORE and NEANDERTHAL, their debut LP featured the band's most muscular incarnation - Barnes, Connell, Kenyon, Wood - a lineup on speaking terms with both Peace Pipe and War Face. The universe will come and go, but there will never be another M.I.T.B. 8 songs. $8.

Between Born Against and M.R.P., Menace Dement featured bassist Burke, guitarist Denny Morrison of NY's DAMAGE, the late Patrick Blank of NY's VIRUS, and vocalist Cassandra Stark of Richard Kern film fame. 2 songs, Sullen Rock. $3.
s/t LP (Vermiform) No collection of Neil Burkenalia would be complete without this moody album of early 90's rock-band-with-mad-lady-singing. 7 songs, art by Burke, pics by grunge photographer Michael Levine, who remains unpaid for this particular job. Vinyl only. $8.

This CD has 40 tracks, including unreleased songs, songs so obscure they may as well have been unreleased, and all the good bits from 2001's "Night Pirate". With cameos by members of LE TIGRE, THE LOCUST, SIX FINGER SATELLITE, and THRONES, among others, and a handsome 16 page photo booklet. "Normal Man" 7" (Gravity) 1994.Ex-BORN AGAINSTers Sam McP and Neil Burke are joined by ex-BORN AGAINSTers Adam W. and Brooks H. for this all-thrash EP. If embarrassing exchanges at the supermarket were mid 90's hardcore bands, this would be their record, Bill. $3.
"Botanica Mysteria" (Kill Rock Stars) 1995, 11 tracks. There is a strange groping quality to this E.P. that never quite hits the mark, eerily reminiscent of the night guitarist N. Burke drunkenly tried and failed to moon a Baltimore audience. Isn't there some small part of us all that feels this way, fumbling impotently with our belts on the vast stage of life? $3.
"Grappling With The Homonids" [sic] split LP (Vermiform). Fall in love all over again with the band that invented, popularized, cheapened and destroyed its own musical genre. Sam & Neil are joined by Tommy Fuckmouth (RAH BRAS) and Max Henkel (IN SEARCH OF OBSESSION) on such nano-classics as "Naked Sailor" and "I'm A Naked Sailor". "Resist The New Way" CD (Vermiform) This 1999 album - Part One in a theme trilogy that includes 2000's "Bolides Over Basra" and 2001's "Night Pirate" - saw the band in peak fighting form. Joe Preston (THRONES, HIGH ON FIRE) sings and plays banjo on this recording, an artistic watershed of the Bullshit Age. $10.
"Bolides Over Basra" CD (Load) - MRP travels to Tunisia, Morocco, Sudan and the Rub al Khali on their second theme album. With help from J. & Rick from SIX FINGER SATELLITE and CHINESE STARS. When the 7th Armored Brigade took Basra on April 6th, 2003, this was the album blaring from their Humvees. $10.
CD (Butter Flavored Records) - March 2005, 9 songs. Imagine that there is this great band from South Dakota who conjure MAN IS THE BASTARD live, and that they have released a CD and that Sam McPheeters did the cover art. Now further imagine that you are Paypaling $10 for this CD. $10.
"Lyburnum" CD (Vermiform) - Maryland's MOSS ICON are on their best behavior with this 1993 album, forsaking their elegiac hippie meltdowns for elegiac hardcore meltdowns. Although guitarist Tonie Joy went on BORN AGAINST, UNIVERSAL ORDER OF ARMAGEDDON, LAVA, THE GREAT UNRAVELING and THE CONVOCATION OF, it is this band's legacy that has continued to dog him well into adulthood, like a drunk driving arrest. $10.
"Small Purse" CD (Vermiform) This 1998 CD caps the label's infatuation w/ noise, which was subsequently followed by the label's fiscal destruction. Are the two related? Buy this CD and find out. Shawn from LANDED and SIX FINGER SATELLITE stars, hand screened foldout cover, minus jewelcase. $10
"Wear The Beat Spectacular" CD (Vermiform) An ancient Chickahominy Indian curse handicaps all bands from Richmond, Virginia. That the Rah Bras are confident, sexy, ex-MEN'S RECOVERY PROJECT, and have been voted Best Live Act of both the 20th and 21st centuries means very little to the vengeful warrior spirits that blight their way. The band recently had all their equipment stolen after a show in Brooklyn; your not buying this CD is kind of like another violation still. 8 songs, with bonus MPEG movie. $10.
"Nipponoppin" 7" (Lungcast). Rah Bras take it to Japan and do what they do best; completely alienate their audience with inappropriate displays of sexuality. 3 song picture disc, live from the far east. Sam McP does art. Hand numbered. $4.

Split 7" (Gloom) - Two Marks from HAIL MARY, DAS OATH and LIMP WRIST share spoken word obligations on this 2005 release. Side one is in Czech. Side two is a brief bit of poetry slam hammery. This is the paradox of all human creativity in a nutshell; you can't have your Michelangelos and Kubricks without a few Mark Telfians and Mark McCoys popping up from time to time. $4.
"A Day Late, A Dollar Short" CD (Southern Lord) - Summer 2005. Finally the pampered packaging deserved of Big Joe Preston (M.R.P., HIGH ON FIRE). 19 rarities, 7" and comp tracks, often conveying the beards and isolation of the first arctic and lunar expeditions. Includes "Coal Sack", the greatest CRO-MAGS song never written. This CD is a treat. $14.
"Ok You Homos, Out Of The Car" 7" (Vinyl Communications) - 1994: Sam McPheeters "sings" on four techo-metal songs, ranging in cheese from brie to edam. Bob VC gets drunk and mistakenly releases it. Since one track features Neil Burke, this record can boast the very first MEN'S RECOVERY PROJECT song. So there's that. $3
"OK you Homos..." CD (VC) Disc includes 7" plus another 95 tracks of remixes, ads, and utter flim-flam. Perfect listening if, say, you happen to be driving solo from Providence, RI to Easthampton, MA on the night of August 11, 2005. Just try to not feel like too much of an asshole when you carefully squeeze your Hawaiian-shirted bulk back into your rental Hyundai without spilling your coffee or mussing your donut, turning on the car stereo to hear yourself singing "sausage people rule". What happened to you? $8.
s/t 7" (Vermiform) - This SF 2-piece was kind of like the Adlai Stevenson of the mid-to-late-90's Grubby Music scene; a good idea that never caught on. Too filthy for hardcore buffs, too freaked-out for stoner rock enthusiasts, TOWEL labored in obscurity for four years. That vocalist John briefly played in MEN'S RECOVERY PROJECT and went to grade school with Neil Burke probably didn't help them in the polls, either. $3.
