ARTHROPLEURIDEA

arthropleurid stratigraphy

Stratigraphic range of the Arthropleuridea.

THE ARTHROPLEURIDEA is a group of extinct Paleozoic diplopods which ranged from the Upper Silurian through the Lower Permian and which has been suggested to be the sister group to the Pentazonia (Wilson 1999; Wilson and Shear, in review). The group comprises three monogeneric orders, Eoarthropleurida, Microdecemplicida and Arthropleurida. The arthropleurids range in size from over two meters in the case of the giant Arthropleura to only a few millimeters in the case of Microdecemplex. Eoarthropleura is known from the Upper Silurian through the Upper Devonian of Europe and North America (Stormer 1976; Shear and Selden 1995; Wilson 1999). Microdecemplex is known from the Middle through Upper Devonian of New York State (Wilson and Shear, in review). Arthropleura is known from both trace and body fossils from the Lower Carboniferous (Sterzel 1918; Pearson 1992; Rossler and Schneider 1997) through the Lower Permian (Ryan 1986; Schneider and Barthel 1997) of Europe and North America.
