"Weird Shit, I like it" - Brett Warnock,
Top Shelf
Let's face it, everyone's got a Fikaris fetish.
Who hasn't the garrulous Queenslander endeared himself to?
Veteran of many a hard-fought bong, he now makes
his home in Melbourne, where most days you'll find him drawing on the couch.
The troublemaking Toowoomban has been publishing
his regular comic for at least 4 years, which bears the title Froth. The
term resonates with with a multiplicity of meanings - it could mean the
inconseqential toppings that mask meaningful depths, or the essential,
primordial ooze from which we all emerged. What is clear is that it's truth
in advertising - the contents continually change in style and approach,
and are rarely longer than a page. It's about as close as you'll
find to a direct channel to one person's subconscious.
|
The Fikaris style of production: 1. Sit on couch with pen and paper.
2. Augment consciousness with various media or physical substances.
3. Draw whatever comes out.
4. Chuckle at handiwork and return to step 1. |
Michael's regular issuings of Froth are supplemented
by a constant flow of tiny comics in varied sizes regarding varied
subjects.

And his contributions are a fixture in anthologies such as Motherwort, Nice, Milk Bar, Bloo Dydee Blud, One, Pantry and just about every other extant anthology. Not surprisingly, Michael has won the prestigious 'Most Prolific' gilded trophy twice in a row at the annual Melbourne Small Press Awards, and received praise from reviewzines such as Milk Bar, Comics Edge, and Comics Quarterly. Other appreciations have seen his work featured in local exhibitions as well as nationwide in the "Cut N' Paste" traveling zine show and the National Young Writers' Festival. And of course, you've seen him in Q-Ray's documentary Comic Book Virus. Of late fevent Fikaris has been scrambling to keep up with demand for the Pure Evil collection (so far Polyester and Minotaur have had trouble keeping it in stock), done with assistance from Greg MacKay. It's a celebration and overview of the Southeast's comix environment, themed around the baser inclinations that lurk in all artists. Also in the works are Fikaris FontsÔ , soon coming to a computer near you. |

What will the future hold for our small press anthropologist? Having just concluded Froth some longer stories beckon, as surely does the couch. Follow frenetic Fikaris in future issues of Australian Home and Garden, New Idea, and Antipodal High Times. - From Who's Who in Australian Alternative Comics, 16th Edition
