My uncle is an avid photographer and in one of our recent family dinners he pulled out the “old” albums and we took a walk down memory lane. So these are some of the pictures. These were taken between 1967 and 1968, some are just days after the Six Day war and they are taken all over Jerusalem and the West Bank. The new header we now have on OJ is from this series of photos. There are over 50 photographs in the series.

Enjoy :)

Nathan Halpern Illustration in Ceramics I met the ceramics artist and illustrator Nathan Halpern in his home in Mevaseret Zion, just outside Jerusalem. Born in 1947, Nathan Halpern has been illustrating, mostly for children books, for over 15 years. Browse through the children’s book section in an Israeli bookstore and you’ll see his work.

Nathan Halpern graduated the Visual Communication program at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. After establishing himself as an illustrator he developed an interest in the three dimensional world and began illustrating in ceramics. Looking at his work you feel like you are watching an animated world that came to life. The vivid unique characters are fascinating and the wide range of brilliant colors make these pieces jump to life.

Halpern explores different characters in his work, concentrating on a particular subject or character, developing it and taking it to new levels with each new piece. These make for some beautiful ceramic series that explore movement and situations for a particular figure. Some notable series included the Bathing Women, Horse Riders, Cars and a series of mezuzah illustrations he did early on.

Nathan has been exhibiting in select galleries around Israel including the national Eretz Israel Museum and the galleries in Neve Tzedek. Nathan Halpern also teaches ceramics to small groups of students at his home studio. His works are now available online.

I was watching a popular talk show last night and it was interesting to see the wide spectrum we have in the Knesset today. On the Yair Lapid Show, a talk show on Israel’s Arutz 2, there were two members of Knesset getting interviewed.

Shimon Peres on Yair Lapid

The first was Shimon Peres (82). Shimon Peres is a veteran in the political scene, an ex Prime Minster, one of the early founders of the Labour party and recently joined Kadima, Ariel Sharon’s party. He was the last one to speak to Sharon before his stroke this week and when asked whether he considered him a friend he answered that he did. Despite their rivalry over the years there is a mutual respect there.

Peres is currently writing his 14th book, is a world renowned politician and has been in the political arena for close to 60 years. He may be somewhat removed from the man on the street but no doubt is a very intelligent and a scholar. He had a good sense of humor in the show and when Yair implied that he and Benjamin Netanyahu were the most ridiculed of all MK’s, he insisted the title was rightfully his. Although mud slinging is a national sport for politicians in Israel, Peres has always tried to keep his hands clean and not respond to the many assaults he received over the years.

The interviewer asked a final question: “What would you like written on your tombstone?” Peres responded: “Passed away before his time”.

Pnina Rosenblum on Yair Lapid

The next Knesset member to be interviewed on the show was the newly appointed Likud member, Pnina Rosenblum (50). Running 39th in the Likud Primaries she got bumped into the seat when MK Tzachi Hanegbi left to join Kadima. She was sworn in 2 weeks ago and is now the latest edition to the Knesset.

Pnina was a model in the early 70’s and was known as a provocative sexy bombshell. There were affairs, rumors and scandals associated with her early years. She later started a singing career and continued on to launch a successful cosmetics company that today employs 150 people.

She was a little defensive in the interview and some of the answers to her questions were a little corky. She sees herself as a fighter for women’s rights and against discrimination (a sore subject and one that can use the attention). Her political career maybe very short as the number for the Likud party now seem to be in the low teens, implying that only 11-13 MK’s will represent the Likud after March. Until then however, Pnina is determined to do as much as she can with the time she has.

When asked what she would like to have written on her tombstone she answered: ”Here lies Pnina Rosenblum – Israel’s Prime Minister 2010-2016.”

Hey you never know …

FYI - Just on the news. Seems like Ariel Sharon had a minor stroke. Details are still unclear, he is still in the trauma wing of Hadassa Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem. He apparently lost consciousness in his office and was rushed to hospital. He is currently undergoing tests.

UPDATE: He seems to be okay. Joking around and checking with doctors that “he is still here”. He reportedly told Haaretz that he “Just needed a few days off”.

Tonight is the Likud Primaries and it should be interesting. No doubt this event will have an influence and voter turn out should be higher. Silvan Shalom and Bibi are going at one another and the race seems close.

Bibi visited the Likud Party history museum this week. The museum was opened a year and 4 months ago, but Bibi asked to visit 5 days before the Likud primaries. Must be some sort of coincidence. While there he got his picture taken next to portraits of the founder of the party, Menachem Begin, and reminisced about the great man and his work.

Hardcore Likud members have noted that Bibi attended Menachem Begin’s yearly memorials only twice, in 1996 and 1999, both surprisingly election years at the Likud.

In his attempt to get closer to the people he has gone to extreme lengths, hugging and kissing as many members of the Likud as possibe. Last week he attended a popular talk show and after the show, the camera following him off stage caught one of his friends was overheard saying to him “you seemed human, it was great, the best I’ve ever seen you.” Strange thing to say to a human being…should we check for a tail or pointy ears ?

Monday next week is election day at the Likud, the “Primaries”. These internal Likud elections will determine who will be their candidate for prime minister. After the Shaul Mofaz quick disappearing act, Silvan Shalom and Bibi are the only main candidates vying for the leadership of the party. Shalom is gaining and Bibi is leading although there are many Likud voters that feel that Bibi is not an option. Many will not forget that when the party needed him most he turned away and went to seek his fortune in the lecture circuit. Some Likud voters will prefer Kadima if Bibi becomes party leader… Should make for an interesting election day at the Likud.

This week at a legal society dinner Benjamin Netanyahu (AKA. Bibi) told the audience that he was offered the position of Finance Minister in Italy by a prominent Italian Businessman, but alas politely refused. Maariv followed up on the story and found out that it happened a little differently. Bibi and Israel’s ambassador to Italy were walking out of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem and ran into an Italian businessman walking in. The man was introduced to Bibi by the ambassador and spoke to him for 3 minutes.

When asked about Bibi’s claim and job offer, he reportedly said that during that brief introduction he mentioned that Italy needs to get its financial affairs in order and that some of the steps taken in Israel should be adopted. Needless to say he was amazed by Bibi’s claim and explained that he was in no position to offer the job, even if he was so inclined.

We’ll miss you Bibi..

Gamila of Pqiin Savta Gamila (Savta granny in Hebrew) is a well known figure in northern Israel. She is a daughter of the Druze nation and the Galilee country. As a young girl she was brought up with a great appreciation of nature. Her mother used the family olive grove to create bathing oils and mixtures of wild herbs and flowers for her daughter. Over the years Gamila continued the tradition and today Gamila is the owner of a business that has become a major attraction and a source of pride for the people of pqiin.

Today Savta Gamila is a family business that serves the Israeli and International market, her name has become a registered trade mark. Visitors to pqiin can stop by the small factory and gift store and enjoy a cup of coffee and the warm hospitality offered by Gamila and her family.
