George Augustus Constantin Phipps (1816-1890)
Earl of Mulgrave, Marquess of Normanby

Born in Whitby as the son of the First Marquess, George Augustus Constantin Phipps also held the courtesy title of Mulgrave. His service in the military began late in 1838, followed up by his political career, which made him a Liberal member of Parliament from 1847 to 1858. Phipps was also comptroller of the Royal Household and a Privy Councillor in 1851.

As Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, his reputation was tarnished by political turbulence which resulted in his dissolving the assembly. His other positions also included the Governorship of Queensland, New Zealand and Victoria. He died in Brighton.
