How To Become a Lifeguard


General Information

The Urbandale Swimming Pool is located at 7201 Aurora Avenue.  Office hours are Noon to5:00pm, Monday through Friday, and during evening and weekend public/lap swim hours.  Urbandale also has 3 wading pools, including an aquatic playground.

    M, W, F: 7:00 - 8:30 pm
    Sat, Sun:  1:00 - 4:00 pm

Lap Swim

    M, W, F: Noon - 1:00pm and 6:00 - 7:00pm
    Sat, Sun: 4:00 - 5:00pm

Wading Pools

Urbandale has three outdoor wading pools for children. Lions Park and South Karen Acres are for children 6 years of age and younger and are free of charge. The Aquatic Playground next to the pool is for children 10 years of age and younger. The fee for the Aquatic Playground for children 2 and younger is free with paid adult. Anyone 3 years of age and older is $3.00. Children must be accompanied by a responsible person at least 14 years of age. Lifeguards are not on duty at these pools. Swim diapers are required when using these pools. The wading pools will not open if it is raining or if the temperature is below 70° at 10:00 a.m.

Pool Rentals

Pool rentals are available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings after public swim.  The Urbandale Pool is available to all persons, organizations, clubs and youth groups.  Reservations are taken in the Pool office on a first-come, first-served basis and depend on availability of staff.  The rental must be pre-arranged at least one week in advance.  Fees are set according to the number of people in the group.  For 1-50 participants: $50; for 51-200 participants: $60.

  • Special Aquatic Playground Birthday Rental!
    Plan your child's birthday party at the aquatic playground! Reservations are on a first come, first serve basis and depend on availability of staff. Rentals are available Monday through Saturday,  during the summer. Renters may have food on the south exterior pool deck. Decorations and the removal of decorations are the responsibility of the renter. Choose from two different times: 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. or 11:15 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Cost for 1.5 hour rental is $30.00. Please make your reservation at the pool during public hours.

How To Become a Lifeguard

Lifeguarding can be a fun, healthy way to make some extra spending money, or to save money for college.  The Urbandale Swimming Pool is a great place to work, and the pay is pretty good too!
