In an Emergency, Dial 911

Do you have what it takes to be a member of the Urbandale Fire Department?  The City's "volunteer" members are actually paid-on-call employees that are trained to some of the highest levels of state certifications available.  They train and respond to real emergencies as any full-time career firefight would.  If you've ever had the desire to give something back to the community and also think you might enjoy the excitement and adrenaline rush of a fire or medical emergency - then this job may be for you.

The typical member is trained to the minimum certification level of Emergency Medical Technician and Firefighter I with the state of Iowa.  These minimum qualifications are required to be a member, but the Urbandale Fire Department provides you with all the needed training.  The EMT course takes about three months to complete and the fire academy usually lasts about six to seven months.

After you become certified as a firefighter/EMT-B you are assigned to a crew night from 11:00pm until 5:00am, every fifth night.  The UFD offers departmental fire and emergency medical training the first three Tuesday evenings of each month.  Overall, the average member works and trains approximately 50-plus hours each month.

For more information, or to have an application mailed to you, contact Chief Jerry Holt at 515.278.3970 or fire@urbandale.org.
