Express yourself!: 200 young people to gather in Brussels to debate on the future of Europe
2 December 2005 On Monday 5 December, President José-Manuel Barroso and Commissioner in charge of Youth, Ján Figel’, will officially launch the European Youth Week (EYW) 2005 under the title “Youth takes the floor”. After the first edition in 2003, this year’s European Youth Week will focus particularly on the active involvement of young people in the European project. Two hundred young people from all over Europe will gather in Brussels in order to voice their opinion on key issues such as the future direction of the EU, their active citizenship and the need for better opportunities for young people. eTwinning: 10,000 schools are now registered!
25 November 2005 The eTwinning action was launched in January 2005 and has quickly established itself as a major instrument for school collaboration in Europe, with 10,000 schools registering their interest. It encourages the formation of school partnerships over the internet, adding a European dimension to the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in school life. eTwinning is the main initiative of the European eLearning programme. In Ireland, there are 102 schools registered. GO

European Commission urges the Government to promote multilingualism
22 November 2005 In a new policy document on multilingualism adopted today, the European Commission urges the Government to play its part, with the other Member States, in furthering the teaching, learning and use of languages. Under the catchphrase, “The more languages you know, the more of a person you are,” the Communication sets out a new strategy for multilingualism. It makes it clear that increased multilingualism will be necessary for Irish citizens to enjoy worker mobility and Irish businesses to be competitive in the EU economy. A new Web portal on languages has also been launched on the EU’s interinstitutional Website EUROPA, with access in all the official languages: http://europa.eu.int/languages GO

Lifelong learning and key competences for all: vital contributions to prosperity and social cohesion
9 November 2005 A Communication approved by the Commission today concludes that Member States must accelerate the pace of reform in their education and training systems, or large proportions of the next generation will face social exclusion. The matter is urgent: despite the important efforts made by all Member States, there is too little progress against the European “benchmarks” fixed for improving young people’s qualifications and competences. Comenius: Improving the quality of European schools and teachers
4 November 2005 The Commission today approved the use of €100 million to support over 50 new European Projects and Networks that are designed to improve quality and strengthen cooperation in the field of school education. In all, nearly 500 organisations across the 31 countries now participating in Socrates will implement the new initiatives. COMENIUS is the part of the ‘Socrates’ European education action programme that targets schools. Through its support for school partnerships, teacher training, and school education networks, it will reach more than three-quarters of a million pupils and over 100,000 teachers this year, involving over 11,000 schools across Europe. The European Commission proposes that 2008 be “European Year of Intercultural Dialogue”
5 October 2005 The Commission today adopted a proposal for a Decision of the European Parliament and of the Council to declare 2008 “European Year of Intercultural Dialogue”. This idea had initially been put forward by the European Commissioner with responsibility for culture, Ján Figel’, during his hearing before the European Parliament in September 2004. With an overall budget of € 10 million, the European Year will draw on the wealth and diversity of a series of specific projects to be implemented during 2008 through programmes and other Community actions. Culture, education, youth, sport and citizenship will be the main areas concerned. GO

Launch of the European Youth Portal: a new tool for 75 million young people in Europe
26 May 2004 How can I do voluntary work in Estonia in the easiest way? How can I fulfil my dream to find a summer job in Italy ? How can I exchange views on the enlarged Europe with young people from other countries ? How can I create a project in my local community ? For young people who want to discover and participate in Europe, the European Youth Portal (http://europa.eu.int/youth/), with links to more than 10 000 websites of interest to young people, is the place to start. The portal, which has been developed with and for young people, was launched today by Commissioners Viviane Reding and Dalia Grybauskaite. During this day, the many achievements at European level in the youth field over the last years will be highlighted, including through an internet chat, the first one to be held in the official 20 languages of the EU, during which the two Commissioners will exchange views with young people across Europe.
