J-Log is Dead, but there is Journalism Hope

    Site News | kpaul on Monday, Dec 19 2005 @ 03:58 AM

J-Log is Dead, but there is Journalism Hope. I'm not going to be updating J-Log anymore. I'm going to leave all the old content up for now, though. Why am I doing this? Well, J-Log has been fun, and I've built it up over the years, but the community hasn't really taken off. The software that runs it is a very heavily hacked version of a little known CMS. I could re-work the site here at mallasch.com with new software, but I thought it was time for a new domain, a new name, and a new direction for my journalism blog. I want to take it a little more seriously. I want to show that there is Journalism Hope. Anyway, so long and thanks for all the links! (Please point them to the new site: Journalism Hope! ;)

    J-Log is getting a redesign

    Site News | kpaul on Sunday, Dec 11 2005 @ 04:52 AM

I just now decided. It will do it some good. Or, what about taking it even further and lifting the heart and soul (the content) out of J-Log and stuffing it into a fresh, clean folksonomyerrific Drupal install. Hmmm. I kinda like the sound of that, you know. The bad side is, I would lose all of the ground I've gained in the search engines over the years. Although mod_rewrite might be able to help with that.

CyberJournalist: New York Times memo on blogging -

To: The Staff From: Jon Landman

    December 7, 2005

    We’re blogospheric.

LOL. Whaa? ;) Seriously, though, the memo, which LA Observed got ahold of first, I think, isn't too bad. That is, it didn't sound so horrible that it would be a 'NY Times' type blog, with fact checking, editors, moderation, etc. And they admitted it was hard to pull the writers off of print but that they did it. And it was cocky (the memo) but not too much so. I'll be watching, Ms. Gray Lady. Maybe there's hope yet?

    Chicago Daily News Launches

    New Media | kpaul on Saturday, Dec 10 2005 @ 12:22 AM

Well, there you go. I found the Chicago Daily News, a new CitJ site started by an ex-Trib staffer, in my logs last week. I'd actually talked to Geoff months ago about it, although he was keeping it off the radar at that point. I told him I'd wait a little before announcing the site so he could throw some more content on, but Poynter beat me to it. So, now that the cat's out of the bag... (In related new, Muncie Free Press started breaking news that isn't in the local paper (The Star Press) yet. I mean, I'm certainly not doing it for the money or the fame, but it's tiring toiling in the trenches, scraping by financially. The good news, though, is that I really feel, as a journalist, that I'm reaching people in various communities across East Central Indiana. I just need to hang on a few more months.

    Steve Outing on CitJ

    New Media | kpaul on Tuesday, Dec 06 2005 @ 05:22 PM

Back from an internet-free (as in sans internet) vacation, Steve Outing has some thoughts on the recent BackFence piece. The conversation continues.

Hey Tribune; Aren't layoffs a bitch?

    The Workplace | kpaul on Monday, Dec 05 2005 @ 03:16 PM

Heh. I probably shouldn't post this because some poor soul low on the ladder will get chewed for the Tribune-wide web woes, but it was kinda funny in a snarky blogtastic sort of way. From LAObserved.

Paying for Moderation with Amazon Mechanical Turk?

    New Media | kpaul on Monday, Dec 05 2005 @ 01:29 AM

I've been messing around with Amazon' s Mechanical Turk web application. It's forming quite a little community around itself already. I've secured a domain name, MechTurkBlog (MTB), and may start to follow the 'community' closer. Very interesting. Anyway, the thought - couldn't AMT be used to pay for things citizen publisher's need on their websites (local content, filling calendars, moderation of comments, etc.)?

Report Stirs Debate: News or Exploitation?

    Ethics-Law | kpaul on Sunday, Dec 04 2005 @ 07:36 AM

Hal Boedeker at pop-up prone Orlando Sentinel: Report stirs debate: News or exploitation? - I guess WFTV-Channel 9 anchor Martie Salt got all teared up on-air while listening to a recorded 911 call. Other local stations didn't run the call. You get the idea. Your thoughts?
