Management Team

Marc Fleury, Ph.D., USA
Founder, Chairman and CEO
Born in Paris in 1968, Marc Fleury got his Ph.D in physics from the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. He started in Sales at Sun Microsystems France and then moved to the US where he worked on early java enablement of SAP at SAPLabs. Marc started the JBoss project in 1999. An ex-Lieutenant in the paratroopers, Marc holds a degree in Mathematics from the Ecole Polytechnique, a master in Theoretical Physics from the Ecole Normale ULM and was a visiting scientist at MIT during his thesis. Marc's research interest focuses on aspect oriented middleware.
Bob Bickel, USA
VP, Corporate Strategy and Development
As Executive Vice President at JBoss, Inc., Bob Bickel is responsible for strategy, corporate development and partnerships. Prior to founding Bickel Advisory Services, he was the General Manager of the HP Middleware Division. Before joining HP, Bickel was executive vice president of products for Bluestone Software Inc., acquired by HP in January 2001. Bickel was one of the original creators who brought Bluestone's application server technology to the marketplace and a reputation for product excellence. Before Bluestone, Bickel spent eleven years at Digital Equipment Corporation. Bickel holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Bucknell University and a master's degree in business administration in finance from Temple University. Bob also serves as an advisor or board member to Arjuna, Apax Partners, Baker Capital, Bristol Technologies, and JBoss, Inc.
Sacha Labourey, Switzerland
General Manager, JBoss Europe
Born in Neuchatel, Switzerland 1975, Sacha Labourey is the General Manager of JBoss (Europe) SaRL. Sacha is focused on managing the rapid expansion of the JBoss, Inc.'s European business. Sacha was also responsible for the first implementation of load-balancing/fail over for JBoss. Prior to the JBoss, Inc., he was the founder of Cogito Informatique, a Swiss consulting firm company working in the application server and middleware fields. Mr. Labourey is a graduate of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology graduate computer science program.
Scott Stark, Ph.D, USA
Founder, Chief Technology Officer
As chief technology officer, Scott Stark is responsible for the technical direction of the JBoss Application Server, overseeing release management, QA testing, and project integration among the JBoss-federated Open Source middleware projects. Scott began his career with JBoss as a leading contributor to the JBoss AS security module. Scott holds a Masters and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware, where he also completed his post-doctoral work. During that period, he became interested in parallel and distributed programming in the context of computationally demanding chemical reaction simulations. His interest in programming led him to leave chemical engineering for a consulting firm that was building a custom distributed risk management system for Bear Stearns. Scott later joined Bear Stearns, where he spent eight years altogether and was promoted to Managing Director. His work focused on the risk management system and distributed real-time messaging servers. Scott obtained his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington, in Seattle.
Bill Burke, USA
Chief Architect
Born in 1971, Bill Burke has a history of implementing middleware starting with when he was introduced to DCE while at the parent company of Open Environment Corporation. He later went on to being a core member of the Orbix2000 team at Iona, where he helped them build some of their CORBA products. After Iona, Bill was introduced to JBoss while building a large marketing J2EE application at an internet startup. As Chief Architect, Bill is closely involved with clustering, the EJB container, and JBoss's Aspect-Oriented Middleware. He also sits on the EJB 3.0 expert committee as JBoss Inc.'s representative. Bill is co-author of O'Reilly's "JBoss 3.2 Workbook", and has numerous other in-print and on-line publications. He graduated magna cum laude with a B.S.C.S. from Northeastern University in Boston in 1994.
Cary Smith, USA
Chief Financial Officer
Cary Smith joined JBoss Inc. in February 2004 as Chief Financial Officer. A seasoned financial executive, Smith brings to JBoss 15+ years of experience in national and international finance and accounting. Smith manages JBoss Inc.'s finances and ensures the company continues to maintain its track record of fiscal discipline. Prior to joining JBoss Inc., Smith served as Chief Accounting Officer for EarthLink, a leading Internet Service, where he oversaw SEC reporting, accounting, financial planning, and participated in many acquisitions. Smith joined EarthLink through its merger with MindSpring Enterprises, where he was vice president and corporate controller and helped the company grow from $100 million to over $1 billion in revenues. Smith holds a B.S. in accounting from Bob Jones University.
Rob Bearden, USA
VP, Sales and Marketing
Rob Bearden brings 15 years of experience in worldwide sales and consulting and operations to JBoss, where he oversees sales, pre-sales, marketing and channel strategy. Bearden joins JBoss from i2 Technologies, a leading supply chain solutions company, where he served as President of the Americas, overseeing i2's business in the United States, Canada, Latin America and Mexico. Prior to i2, Bearden served as senior vice president of worldwide sales for Manhattan Associates. He also spent six years at Oracle Corporation in various executive sales positions, including group vice president of Western Operations and area vice president of the Southeast. Bearden started his career at Data General and ERI. He holds a B.S. in Marketing from Jacksonville State University.
Brad Murdoch, USA
VP, Services
As VP of Services, Brad Murdoch is in charge of scaling JBoss' services organization to meet growing demand from companies that have turned to JBoss open source middleware for large-scale enterprise applications. His focus is on JBoss' expert support, training and consulting services business worldwide. Murdoch joined JBoss from Wind River Systems, a market leader in embedded software solutions, where he most recently served as vice president of strategic alliances. For most of his career at Wind River, Murdoch was vice president and general manager of the Wind River Services business unit, with responsibility for a staff of 200 and driving $30-$40 million in revenue. Prior to Wind River, Murdoch was a general manager at Unisys Corporation, in their Global Customer Services organization in Australia and New Zealand. Murdoch's 20-year career also included engineering and sales positions at Hewlett Packard Limited and Clarity Software. He holds an Honours Degree (B.Sc. with honors) in Computing Science from the University of Glasgow, Scotland.
Shaun Connolly, USA
VP, Product Management
As Vice President of Product Management at JBoss, Inc., Shaun Connolly is responsible for managing the products that comprise the JBoss Enterprise Middleware System. Prior to joining JBoss, Shaun was Vice President of Product Integration at Princeton Softech where he led the development of integrated database archiving solutions for the top ERP/CRM applications. Shaun was also Director of Product Management for HP Middleware and Bluestone Software where he focused on creating a modular, service-centric enterprise middleware platform. Before joining Bluestone, Shaun served as Vice President of Development at Primavera Systems, a leading project management software provider. Shaun holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University and has been a panelist, speaker, and contributor of articles on such topics as aligning IT operations with business goals and getting the most from IT investments.
Ben Sabrin, USA
Vice President, Americas
Ben Sabrin Ben Sabrin is Vice President, Americas responsible for Sales and Field operations. Ben was the first employee at JBoss outside the founders and has grown the Americas sales organization. As a member of the executive team, Ben also helps evaluate open source projects for acquisition and was instrumental in the acquisition of Hibernate, JGroups, and jBPM. Previous to JBoss he was the Director of Business Development in the Southeast for Pencom Systems an IT consulting and recruiting firm. Ben is very active in the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta's Technology Initiative since inception.
Tom Cooper, USA
Vice President, Channels
Tom Cooper is responsible for overall strategy and execution for the entire JBoss worldwide Channels Organization. Prior to joining JBoss in March 2005, Mr. Cooper was Group Vice President at Oracle Corporation managing field operations and sales for the eastern half of the United States, where he was accountable for the sale of all products lines accounting for over $1.5 billion in revenue and 1,400 employees. Mr. Cooper held the position President of the Americas for i2 Technologies, overseeing all sales, consulting, support, education, marketing and field operations in North and South America. Mr. Cooper’s helped EXE Technologies to a successful IPO as the Executive Vice President of Worldwide Field Operations. In the beginning of his career Mr. Cooper worked for Data General Corporation for 11 years in various sales positions and left as Vice President of Worldwide Alliances. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a Minor in Marketing from Southwest Missouri State University.
Steve Raby
Director of Sales and Business Development EMEA
Steve Raby's belief in JBoss' momentum and driving role in reshaping the future of the software industry underscores his role as director of sales and business development in EMEA. Steve is in charge of building and managing the European team that delivers on the promise of enabling customers to get more out of their IT budgets, rolling out their JBoss Open Source software deployments with expert implementation and support. Steve joined JBoss after 17 years at Sun Microsystems, during which time he saw his goal grow from $1M to over $500M, through a variety of roles including sales, sales management, product marketing, product management and partnering. His last 5 years at Sun were as Director of Sales for the Mid-Market and finally as Director of Partner Sales for UK and Ireland. He also has experience with small companies as a panel member of a venture capital company and as a non-executive director of a dot-com start-up. He lives and works in London.
Nathalie Mason-Fleury, USA
Director of Communications
Nathalie Mason joins husband, Marc Fleury, in his efforts to grow JBoss.org and JBoss, Inc. as Director of Communications. Prior to joining JBoss, Inc., Nathalie worked as a financial writer for Franklin Templeton mutual funds. Nathalie holds a masters degree in Comparative Literature from the Universtiy of Paris and a bachelor's degree in English from Wellesley College.

David Skok
General Partner, Matrix Partners
David Skok joined Matrix Partners as a General Partner in May 2001. He has a wealth of experience running companies. David started his first company at age 22. Now 47, David has founded a total of four separate companies and performed one turn around. Three of these companies went public. He joined Matrix from SilverStream Software, which he founded in June 1996. Prior to its July 2002 acquisition by Novell, SilverStream was a public company that had reached a revenue run rate in excess of $100m, with approximately 800 employees and offices in more than 20 countries around the world. In addition to his broad focus on enterprise software, David has specific focus on the areas of Open Source software, and utility computing products for the data center.
Larry Augustin
CEO, Medsphere Systems Corporation
Larry Augustin joined Medsphere Systems Corporation as CEO in January 2005. Known as one of the early innovators in bringing open source technologies to the commercial market, Mr. Augustin helped coin the term "open source." In 2000, Worth Magazine named him one of the Top 50 CEOs in America. Prior to joining Medsphere, Mr. Augustin held a number of distinguished roles including Venture Partner for Azure Capital Partners and founder and CEO of VA Linux where he founded SourceForge.net (the world's largest open source software development community) and led VA Linux to the most successful first day gain for any IPO. He currently sits on the Board of Directors of VA Linux, the Open Source Development Lab (OSDL), SugarCRM, and JBoss.

Peter Fenton
General Partner, Accel Partners
Peter Fenton has worked in the Silicon-Valley for the past ten years as an entrepreneur, strategy consultant, and venture investor and joined Accel in 1999 to focus on software and technology-enabled services investments. Peter's current areas of interest include J2EE, service oriented computing, systems management, and application service providers. He led Accel's investment in JBoss, and currently serves on the Board of Directors at Apexon, Coremetrics, Mendocino Software, Reactivity, Terracotta, and Wily Technology. Peter was also responsible for Accel's position in Centerrun (acquired by Sun Microsystems) and is actively involved with ModelN. Peter holds an MBA from Stanford Business School, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar, and a B.A. from Stanford University, where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa.
Nick Beim, USA
General Partner, Matrix Partners
Nick Beim is a General Partner at Matrix Partners, one of the nation's leading venture capital firms, where he focuses primarily on investments in enterprise software and services. In addition to his work with JBoss, Nick serves on the board of OATSystems, an RFID software vendor based in Watertown, Massachusetts. Prior to Matrix, Nick advised a variety of technology companies on strategic, operational and financial issues at McKinsey & Co and Goldman, Sachs & Co. Nick graduated from Stanford University and holds an M.Phil. from Oxford University, where he was a Marshall Scholar.
