|Hallicrafters S-38 shortwave radio made in 1946.
Raymond Loewy, the industrial designer, gave the Hallicrafters line a new
streamlined look when he redesigned it after World War II. The S-38 was one of the
first of the post war radios from Hallicrafters. Priced low, it was aimed at the
amatuer market. The model shown here was the first of the S-38 line, which continued
through several variations, until coming to an end with the S-38C in 1955. This
model had six tubes and BFO control. All later models had only five tubes and did
away with the variable pitch BFO. The radio had four shortwave bands and one AM band
available on the left dial, with fine tuning done using the smaller right dial.
