Research and Teaching Interests

(L2 Acquisition, Cross-Language Phonetics, Computer Speech Training, Scientific Report Writing)

A great deal of controversy exists regarding the extent to which the speech system remains plastic. Some researchers have suggested that effective speech learning is limited to a 'critical period' that ends near the beginning of adolescence, while others believe the ability of adult learners to both perceive and produce nonnative phones remains intact even into adulthood. A major goal of Steve's research is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the degree to which it is possible for adult L2 learners to realign or modify their perceptual spaces for acquiring new speech contrasts.
