SIZE:
Approx. age 2-4 years.
 
MATERIALS:
Approx. 150 yds of worsted weight yarn
Knitting needles in size #7 US (4.5mm)
or 16 ins circular needles lenght in size #7 US (you'll need 2 circulars or a set of DPNs for the crown, if working in the round)
 
NOTE: Sample shown was knitted flat. To knit it in the round ignore the selvedge sts.
 
TENSION/GAUGE (in texture stitch):
18 sts and 28 rows = 4 ins
 
INSTRUCTIONS:
Cast on 78 sts (76 if in the round) and beg chart pattern (row 1 in RS), working selvedge sts in st st (K in RS and P in WS rows) until 44th row.

24th row (WS): following chart, inc 1 st (79 sts, 77 if in the round)

45th row (WS): dec 2 sts evenly (77 sts) (75 if in the round). Start the crown.
46th row (RS): *K1, ssk (slip, slip, knit, or sl 1, K1, psso), (P2, K2 twice), P2, K2 tog** (repeat from * to ** 4 times more).
Cont fol chart for dec until rem 17 sts on needles (15 if in the round).
 
Next row (RS): s st, K3 tog tbl (5 times), s st (7 sts) (5 if in the round).
Break off yarn and using a blunt tapestry needle, Break yarn, thread end trough remaining sts, pull up and fasten off. Sew back seam if knitting flat.
 
MAKE BRAID AND TASSEL:
 
For the braid, cut 6 lengths, each 6 ins long. For the tassel cut 25 lengths, each 4 ins long. Stitch tassel to end of braid and the other end sew to top of hat from WS using the yarn tail rem.
If you prefer, make a pom pom and attach to center of top.
