|Artist:||Lefebvre, Claude (Fontainebleau, 1633 - Paris, 1675)|
|Medium:||Original Etching & Engraving|
|Note:||Claude Lefebvre: A fine French portrait painter and etcher, Claude Lefebvre studied art under Le Sueur and Le Brun at Fontainebleau. Lefebvre quickly established himself as a leading portraitist and at the age of thirty he was appointed a member of the prestigious Royal French Academy. The same year (1663) he etched this beautiful portrait of Charles Patin, a leading doctor of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Paris. Several years later Claude Lefebvre visited London. While there he was invited to paint at the court of King Charles II. The art of Claude Lefebvre is included in such major collections as the National Portrait Gallery, London, and the Louvre, Paris.|
|Although primarily a painter, Lefebvre also etched a small number of exceptional portraits. Unlike most of his contemporaries, who based their engravings upon the designs of other artists, Lefebvre both designed and etched his art. Examples of his etched art are in the collections of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, and other galleries.|
