Ontario government completes Highway 417 between Ottawa and Arnprior

New Four-Lane Highway Open To Drivers Ahead Of Schedule

ARNPRIOR, ON, Sept. 24 /CNW/ - The Ontario government has completed the
final phase of construction on Highway 417 between the Town of Arnprior and
Ottawa ahead of schedule, Transportation Minister Harinder Takhar announced
"This is great news for the 15,000 drivers who take Highway 417 every
day," said Takhar. "Drivers on this new four-lane highway will benefit from
improved road safety features and a quicker commute between Ottawa and
communities west of the city."
The widening project was divided into five phases to avoid disruption to
traffic and took five years to complete. The final phase of construction
included paving Highway 417 for 17 kilometres and completing the realignment
of Regional Road 29, Madawaska Boulevard and Grant's side Road. Construction
work on this phase began in April of 2004 and will be completed, ahead of
schedule, today.
"I am very pleased that this significant highway project is completed,"
said Ottawa West-Nepean MPP Jim Watson. "This important construction project
was long overdue."
Eastbound lanes on Highway 417 will be open to traffic shortly and
westbound lanes will be open to traffic later today. Construction on the
access roads to the new highway is scheduled to continue for another month.
A safe, efficient and integrated transportation system is key to building
strong communities. The Ontario government is investing nearly $1 billion in
highway infrastructure this year to improve safety, ease congestion and save
drivers time.
