The following is an alphabetical list of Chisholms, known to have
come and stayed in New Zealand in the 19th century. Where parentage
and place of birth is known, it is given.

Adam Chisholm (30) sailed on the 'Slain Castle' as an assisted immigrant from Deal to Wellington, arriving 25
Jan 1841. Possibly son of Robert Chisholm and Helen Tait (b. 1801,

Alexander Chisholm (b. 1858) in Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright son of John Chisholm and Barbara
Hastings, sailed on the 'Dunedin' from Glasgow to Port Chalmers, 6 Dec 1879.

Allan Chisholm (b. 1849) in Breakachy son of John Chisholm and Abigail Forbes, a farm
servant from Moray, sailed on the 'Agnes Muir' as an assisted immigrant from Glasgow to Dunedin, arriving 7

Andrew Chisholm (b. c1847) in the Berwickshire area, son of Benjamin Chisholm and Mary Darling
came to Dunedin as a member of a ship's crew.in 1868.

Angus Chisholm (b. 1831) on the Isle of Skye, son of Farquhar Chisholm and Marion Macdonald,
arrived in Otago from Australia, in 1861. Originally sailed on
the 'Switzerland' from Liverpool to Port Phillip under the Highland and Island
Emigration scheme in 1855.

Archibald Chisholm, (b.1838) in the Strathglass area, son of Kenneth Chisholm and Catherine
(Kathleen) McLennan, sailed as an assisted immigrant, on the 'New Great Britain' from Gravesend to Bluff arriving 10 Aug 1863.

Atalanta Chisholm (b. 1834?) in Kirkcudbright?? was also possibly the daughter of Roderick
and Isobel Ross of Creich, Sutherland. She travelled on the 'Strathmore' from Deal to Otago arriving 2 Oct. 1856. In 1860, she married
John Murray (29), from Sutherlandshire, who had arrived on the
'Robert Henderson' in 1858.

Catherine Chisholm (b. 1853) at Gorebridge, Midlothian, daughter of Samuel Chisholm and Euphemia
Baird, who had emigrated to Michigan, U.S.A. Sailed from the U.S.A.
to Scotland and then on the 'City of Auckland' as an assisted immigrant from Glasgow to Dunedin, arriving 22

Colin Chisholm (b. 1811) in Fodderty, Ross and Cromarty, son of John Chisholm and Helen
Cameron, with his wife Margaret McLennan sailed on the 'Bombay'
from England, arriving in Auckland on 8 Dec 1863. They went north
to Kauri to join his brother William, but sadly died the following

David Hill Chisholm (b. 7 May 1872) in Southmuir, Kirriemir, Angus. Son of James Chisholm and Susan
Hill. Thought to have sailed to New Zealand on the Tokomaru from
London to Wellington, arriving 26 October 1900.
Donald Chisholm (b. c1821) at Kilmorack, son of John Chisholm and Ann Noble and his second
wife, Helen Robertson, accompanied by their grandson, Donald (13)
sailed on the 'Caroline' as assisted immigrants from Glasgow to Port Chalmers, arrived
23 May 1883.

Donald Chisholm (b. c1834) on the Isle of Skye, son of Farquhar Chisholm and Marion Macdonald,

the 'Greyhound' from Gravesend to Lyttleton, arriving 7 May 1865

Duncan Chisholm (Baptised 1817) in Inverness, son of Roderick, baker of Inverness, and Margaret
Anderson of Inverness, with his wife Elizabeth Sedman, and children,
William (15); Alexander (8); Burlinson (5); Duncan (3); Thomas
(2); and Jane (1) travelled from their London home on the 'Tamar' from Gravesend to Auckland, arriving on 28 Jan., 1858.

the 'Storm Cloud' as an assisted immigrant from Glasgow to Port Chalmers arriving

Duncan Edward Chisholm (b. 1835) at Urquhart, son of Donald Chisholm and Margaret McKenzie, sailed
on the 'Storm Cloud' with cousins William and Duncan, as an assisted immigrant from
Glasgow to Port Chalmers arriving 26 Apr 1860.

Hugh Chisholm (b. 1848) in Inverness, Scotland, the son of Hugh Chisholm and Ann Campbell,
sailed on the 'Ocean Mail' as an assisted immigrant from London to Wellington arriving 2

Hugh Marshall Chisholm (b. 1865) in Hawick, Roxburghshire, the son of Thomas Stephenson Chisholm
and Margaret Hamilton, came to Dunedin, round 1890. After World
War 1 his wife died, and he and his sons went on to Sydney, Australia.

James Chisholm (b. 1804) in Colchester, Essex, son of William and Jane Chisholm arrived
in Wellington from Australia about 1858, with his three daughters
Julia (27), Emma (25) and Harriet (24).
Jessie Chisholm, (Mrs. David Main) (b. 1832) in Crichton, Midlothian, daughter of William Chisholm and Helen
Lees, married in Victoria, in 1853. Sailed on the 'Alhambra' from Melbourne to Dunedin, arriving on 26 Jan 1864, to join her
husband, David Forsyth Main, who had arrived a month earlier.

John Chisholm (b. circa 13 Jul 1799) at Urquhart. Sailed on the 'Blenheim' as an assisted immigrant, from Glasgow to Wellington, arriving
on 27 December 1840. Possibly son of Roderick and Margaret Chisholm.
Stayed only a matter of weeks, being tempted by promises of regular
employment, high wages and land from the Tasmanian Government.
Travelled to Hobart aboard the 'Lord Sidmouth' arriving there on February 1841.
John Chisholm (b. 1818) in Glasgow, son of Alexander and Elizabeth Scoullar, with his
wife, Jean Fisher and their sons, Alexander (18); James (16);
Robert (14); and John (12) sailed on the 'Three Bells' from Glasgow to Dunedin arriving on the 13 Jul 1858. From Scotlandwell,

John Chisholm (b. 1829) in Crichton, Midlothian, son of William Chisholm and Helen Lees,
is thought to have come to Dunedin during 1863, from Victoria,
Australia, where his family had been since 1851.

John Chisholm (b. 1838) at Ledgerwood, Berwick, son of Thomas Chisholm, with his wife
Barbara Hastings (b. 1833) sailed on the 'Ionic' as assisted immigrants from Gravesend to Port Chalmers with their
three sons,Thomas (19), William (10) and James (2) on 26 April,
arriving Wellington on 12 June 1883.

John Chisholm (b. 1841) at Kilmorack, Inverness-shire son of Kenneth Chisholm and Catherine
(Kathleen) McLennan of Kintail, Ross & Cromarty, sailed with
his wife Ann Miller (b. 1849 Aberdeenshire) and their four daughters,
Catherine (14), Mary (12), Ann (9) and Jessie (5). Arrived in
New Zealand about 1884.

John Chisholm (b. 1851) at Groom, Kiltarity and his brother Hugh Chisholm (b. 1855) at Kirkhill, sons of Donald Chisholm and Ann Chisholm, sailed
on the 'Auckland' as assisted immigrants from Glasgow to Port Chalmers, 27 Oct

John Moffatt Chisholm (b. 6 May 1807) in Inverkeithing, Fife. Son of George Chisholm and Madeline Moffatt
whose children mainly went to Australia. It has been verified
that he stayed in New Zealand until at least 1835. In 1838, he
married in Sydney, where he joined his brother in business and
became a successful businessman in Melbourne.

Joseph Wilson Chisholm (b. 1831) in Silkstone, Yorkshire, son of Daniel Chisholm, and Sarah Wilson
of Sheffield sailed to Port Philip, Australia on the 'Ladyhead' 1852 ,and later from Victoria to Wellington, arriving on the
15th Nov 1854.
Margaret Chisholm (b. 1824) at Glen Urquhart, daughter of Donald Chisholm and Margaret McKenzie,
arrived in Otago round 1866. Margaret married Donald Ross the

Marion (Mearon) Chisholm (b. 1815) on the Isle of Skye, daughter of Donald Chisholm and Christian
Douglas, arrived in Port Chalmers on the 'Sevilla' on 31 Oct 1862, and married William Clark in 1867.

Marion Chisholm (b. c1842) on the Isle of Skye sailed on the 'Margaret Galbraith' as an assisted immigrant from Greenock to Port Chalmers, arriving
7 May 1872.

Marrian Chisholm (b.c1843) in the Berwickshire area, daughter of Benjamin Chisholm and Mary
Darling arrived in Dunedin in 1863. Married George Galloway in

Mary Chisholm (b. 1828) at Glen Urquhart, daughter of Donald Chisholm and Margaret McKenzie.
She was the widow Mary McKay when she arrived in New Zealand before
1871, and married Peter McAlister that year.

Robert Chisholm (b. 1797) in Melrose, son of Robert Chisholm and Helen (Nellie) Tait, married
Isabella Baird, in Edinburgh in 1833. Travelled with their children,
Isabella (20); Margaret (17); Robert (15); James(13); Jessie (11);
John (8); Mary (7) and Wilhelmina (5), arriving in Auckland on
the 'William Denny' from Sydney on 24 Nov. 1854, having travelled earlier on the
'Hurricane' to Australia.

Simon Chisholm (b. 1844) in Breakachy, a son of John Chisholm and Abigail Forbes, a farm
labourer from Moray, sailed on the 'Edward P. Bouverie' as an assisted immigrant from Glasgow to Dunedin, arriving 16

Walter Chisholm (b. 1831) in Hobkirk, Roxburghshire, son of James Chisholm and Janet Brown
of Hobkirk, arrived in Victoria in the early 1850s. He married
Rachel Graham (b. 1837) in Victoria in 1863. They sailed from
Melbourne on the 'Alhambra' for Hokitika, arriving 26 Jun 1867. Rachel had been an assisted
immigrant who arrived in Victoria in 1860.

William Chisholm (b. 1800) in Scalpa, Skye, son of John Chisholm and Helen Cameron of Maryburgh,
Ross & Cromarty. Sailed on the 'Silver Eagle' from Gravesend to Auckland with his wife, Margaret Tolmie (born
1812 in Inverness) and their children, Grace (26), Margaret (23),
John (20), William (16), Barbara (11), and Flora (9), arriving
on 6 Jan 1863.

his wife Margaret McKenzie, sailed on the 'Andrew Jackson' as assisted immigrants from Glasgow to Port Chalmers, arriving

William Chisholm (b. 1848) at Daviot, son of Archibald Chisholm and Mary McBain sailed on

William Farquharson Chisholm (b. 1850) at Birse, Aberdeernshire, son of John Chisholm and Eliza Grant,
with his wife, Martha Murray Emslie (b.1860 at Alford, Aberdeenshire)
left England for Brisbane, Australia in 1884 on the 'Crown of Aragon' and then later to Tasmania. After 13 years in Tasmania, came
to Dunedin in Nov 1897 with their children, William (13); John
(11); Caroline (10); Alexander (7); and Malcolm (6)
William King Chisholm (b. 1825) in Ontario, Canada, son of Colonel George Chisholm (born New
York State) and his wife Eliza. Went to Victoria, Australia before
1855 where he married Susan Slavin and had 8 children before she
died in 1865. William King travelled on alone to the West Coast
of New Zealand sometime before 1879 to mine for gold.
There are another 34 known Chisholms who came to New Zealand before
1900, whose identities have not yet been established: 7 were from
England and 27 from Australia. Of the Australian Chisholms, 17
(all single) came at the height of the gold rushes, between 1861
and 1867, and most gave their occupation as mining. It is unlikely
many stayed. Once the identities of any of these 34 Chisholms
are verified, they will be added to the list above.
