Epic trilogy tops favourite film poll

By ABC Online's Callista Cooper

The phenomenon of the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy has not waned, with Australians voting it the number one film in a nationwide poll by the ABC.

Peter Jackson's epic Oscar-winning fantasy trilogy was revealed as Australia's favourite film last night on ABC TV.

The three films were classed as one for the poll.

The fantasy genre proved popular among the voters, with Blade Runner, Star Wars and Princess Bride also featuring in the top 10.

Only a sprinkling of foreign films made it into the top 100, but the French film Amelie, a comedy about a Parisian girl who sets out to help others, staked its claim in Australians' hearts with a number two position.Pulp Fiction's inclusion in the top 10 was no surprise, as it commonly features in top movie lists. It won the seventh spot.

The four-hour 1939 classic Gone With the Wind came in at number nine.

Rounding out the top 10 were The Shawshank Redemption (4th spot), Donnie Darko (5th), and Fight Club (10).

The highest polling Australian film was the classic 1997 comedy The Castle (24th spot).

Other Australian films to make the top 100 included Moulin Rouge (31), Picnic At Hanging Rock (47), Muriel's Wedding (74) and Gallipoli (78).
