December 2005

08.12.05. Finally! A major update to the website, and another entry in the News section! Sorry to be so slack with the updates, but boy have we been working hard. It's always a good sign when you don't hear from us for a while!

2005 has blown away all of our wildest expectations for the quality of the client briefs passing our way. We're achieving more and more repeat business, and we can't ask for better encouragement than that. Thanks to everyone, past and present.

So this new update includes 18 new project updates, including commissions from Hed Kandi, Kookai, Intel, Bloomingdales and many more. We'll be updating all of these sections with more photographs as we start to receive the final products back to us.

You can now visit hedkandi.com to buy posters of our recent artwork for them, and find out the latest releases.

Also, if you're in the market for our artwork, why not check out COSH for limited edition prints. There are just three on there at the moment, but these will be increased soon.

For those of you in the US watching MTV last night, you will have seen Common perform live as part of the Nokia Unwired series. Take a good close look at that hoodie he was wearing! We're so proud to be achieving this kind of exposure for our Scott Langton clothing. Big props to everyone at Scott Langton. Here's a link.

Also, soon to come on the website will be our best animation work to date featuring six animations for the rebranding of ITV2 in the UK, in collaboration with RedBeeMedia. We're just working on those finishing touches!

Finally, for now, there have been lots of publications out recently featuring our work, but for us the pick of the bunch is Illusive, published by Die Gestalten Verlag. Worth a look!

Seasons Greetings, to one and all...

September 2005

20.09.05. Fresh faced and raring to go after 10 days back in England, we have news of some great new jobs that have come our way!

We're thrilled to announce that we're taking over all of the design for Hed Kandi's label, in partnership with Zip Design, back in the UK. Click here to view the press release which shows our first design for the label, and ushers in a new era for Hed Kandi after 50 designs from the previous artist, Jason Brooks.

We'd like to pass on our respect to Jason for some amazing work for Hed Kandi over the years, and we'll do our best to keep the brand moving forward. Thanks to Sam and Peter for making this happen.

For those of you in London, you might want to pop by the V&A to see a display featuring 70 years of Penguin book covers, where you will also see our latest Penguin work featured. It feels wonderful to have our work shown in such a grand institution.

Then, slightly less grand, but no less appealing to us, don't forget to buy your mum a box of Terry's All Gold chocolates available now in the UK and boxed in our finest work.

Upcoming briefs include animation work for a prime UK television channel (we'll reveal more later), press ads for VH1 Soul in the USA, ads for Clarks, Citibank, Maltesers, Artful Dodger, and the Cosmopolitan casino in Las Vegas!

Finally, more celebrity spots in our clothing designs for Artful Dodger include Shaggy and the Yingyang Twins!

August 2005

10.08.05. We're delighted to announce that between the dates of Sunday 2nd April, and Saturday 15th April 2006, Vault49 will be exhibiting at the Coningsby gallery, located on Tottenham St. in the West End of London.

The exhibition will be a collaboration between Vault49, Stephan Langmanis and Daryl Waller. We have a working title, and have already starting designing for it, but we will keep everything underwraps 'till next year!

It's a dream come true for us to have a West End gallery, and we really can't wait! It certainly adds to the debate of how graphic design is increasingly encroaching on the art world, which is a subject we feel actively engaged in and passionate about.

10.08.05. We're very excited to announce that we'll be lecturing at the Art Directors Club of Tulsa, in Oklahoma, USA. We'll be spending a couple of days in and around Tulsa, which we're looking forward to immensely, and addressing an audience on 23rd March, 2006.

Previous guest speakers have included the likes of Rick Cusick, Marc English, and Milton Glaser. It's quite daunting to follow them! Come along if you can...

09.08.05. Check out the new Collector's Edition issue of Computer Arts Projects magazine, out now. It's entitled the 100 Rules of Graphic Design, and includes extracts from an extensive interview with Jonathan here at V49. It also includes such contributors as Neville Brody, Peter Saville, David Carson, and Alan Kitching.

Extracts from our philosophy and design approach at Vault49 are noted as the first most important rule of the graphic design section, as well as numbers nine, and 20!

Computer Arts goes on to summarise the 10 most important rules for graphic design, and we were very happy indeed to see that we were considered to have advised the number one most important rule in design, or indeed any field: the key to success is to do what you do, and make sure the world knows about it.

We're not too sure we're too happy about the concept of graphic design "rules", but nonetheless we're very flattered that our opinion was valued. Big thanks to Mark Penfold.

On a related note, the image alongside our final comment is a collaborative piece between Vault49 and Daryl Waller, who we're working more and more with at the moment. This image was only credited as Vault49 work, and we wanted to correct that.

July 2005

12.07.05. Here's some pics of the Black Eyed Peas, wearing Vault49 designs for Scott Langton. Image One | Image Two | Image Three | Image Four.

06.07.05. Morning all! The month of June has been a crazy month for us, and only now do we have a brief moment to sit back and take stock. First things first, we thought you might like to see a photo of our marquee at Glastonbury! Click here. The Guardian took some more professional photos, and we'll post those when they're sent to us.

Also, we're currently in the process of some fantastic commissions for Microsoft, Bloomingdales' Christmas bag (half a million of them!), Line Skis, CompAir, Source Magazine, Nintendo, and Aquage. We've also just had two fantastic confidential briefs from France which we hope to tell you more about later, and discussions with Volkswagen and Budweiser for new ad campaigns. And still everything we do feels like fun... what a great summer!

In the meantime, please say hello to the Vault's two most recent additions, Number Four and Number Nine.

June 2005

06.06.05. There's a new front to our website featuring a collaboration between Vault49 and Daryl Waller. This is a sneak preview of things to come. Some really nice stuff in production!

We're slowly working offline on updating the website, and putting together a preview of lots of the work we've been doing for Scott Langton's clothing label. In the meantime, here's some recent press out this week with Ludacris wearing one of our jackets! Click here for the sneak preview. We've also got shots of Usher, Ashton Kutcher, and Jermaine Dupri wearing our designs which we'll put on the web too.

May 2005

18.05.05. Some fantastic new projects to announce today! They've been coming thick and fast over the last week or two and include work for Bloomingdales, Microsoft, Line Skis, and... and... and... the Guardian Glastonbury marquee!! Does it get any more fun!?

The Guardian is a leading UK national newspaper/ media group who have their own huge marquee at the Glastonbury Festival every year. For those of you outside the UK, Glastonbury is the world's largest greenfields festival, and has been an icon of British culture for decades. We're going to be designing the roof of their tent, support pillars, DJ booth, accompanying press features, and an exclusive Glastonbury CD.

Again in the UK, all of our Maltesers work is displayed on billboards across all corners of the UK, and we're getting family and friends to take as many pictures as they can find so we can post a few on the web for all to see.

Scott Langton's Spring 2006 has now been finished, and our designs on Scott's fantastic tailoring is currently with the manufacturers, ready for trade shows later this year. We've enjoyed collaborating on this project with Daryl Waller - a good friend, and amazing designer. We need to keep the designs hush-hush for now, but we're looking forward to showing you in a few months! Pretty soon we'll be posting images from his 2005 seasons, which are available now. Sorry for being slack!

Over the next week or two we'll be adding more recently finished work for clients such as Nintendo Magazine, Camel, Kookai, GQ Magazine (US), another cover for Penguin, Marketer Magazine, and more!

We successfully pursued a Finnish clothing company called Jim & Jill for abuse of copyright after they stole our Wurzel image and used it blatantly as their lead design in the Xmas campaign! They have now settled with us outside court, we're pleased to say. Thanks to our Finnish friends for writing in to let us know about the infringement!

Other news is that we are moving office at the end of the month to East 2nd St. This is just around the corner in NY.

There's soooo much more to fill you all in on, but for now we've got to get ready to go to a Snoop concert tonight (you gotta love living in NY). This weekend we're also taking our first summer vacation out to Fire Island (just outside NY) and hope to be working from there a lot of the summer! Last but not least... c'mon Liverpool next week in the Champions League!!

March 2005

Scott has just commissioned us to oversee all aspects of graphic design for his company, and we're massively excited about what this is going to produce... we'll be behind all aspects of design, from his clothing graphics, website, look-books, stationary.. you name it we'll be working hard to make it look great!

Also, look out for this month's copy of Clear magazine, in which our work in DGV's Wonderland book is given an exclusive feature in the mag. Available in the US and Canada.

18.03.05. We're back with a web update, and this time it's full of Moving Candy! We're proud to reveal our design and animation collaboration with Russ Murphy, produced for MTV UK.

The animation is the 30-second opening sequence to a new show on MTV UK called HipHop Candy. We had a LOT of fun making this with Russ, and we hope this will be the first of many Vault49 animations.

Scroll left and click on the link in our Moving Candy section! You can't miss it....

It's the end of day Friday as we write this, but we'll be updating the web more at the start of next week and we're looking forward to showing you new work for Nike, Wrangler, Digit, Penguin, Rogue, NY Magazine, and NY Times.

Loads of new work, on which we'd welcome any feedback or comments, and there's a mini-redesign of the site, just for the seasonal fun of it! We've also introduced an archive section to the site to bring things up to date on the main page, but still maintaining a lot of the old work in the archive for those who like to browse. We hope you like!
