A mismanaged war, botched hurricane relief, illegal wiretaps, secret torture prisons, ethics violations. Just when I thought we had seen the worst from the Bush Administration, there is a new outrage that is down-right mean-spirited.
Big tax evaders -- mostly wealthy individuals and large corporations -- cost the government $300 billion each year in unpaid taxes. But in George Bush's America, these folks are getting off virtually scot-free.
The Internal Revenue Service is spending its limited enforcement resources on low-income taxpayers -- most of whom did nothing wrong. The IRS froze more than 120,000 taxpayers' refunds on suspicion of fraud without notifying the taxpayers or giving them a chance to respond. This practice must stop, and I need your help to stop it.

At the One America Committee, we believe that a Democrat should never lose an election simply because he or she doesn't have the funds needed to compete. That's why earlier this year Senator Edwards launched Raising the States, a grassroots campaign that supports Democrats around the country who are running for state legislature.
It's clear by now that reforms will not come from the federal level. They must come from the state level. Through Raising the States we put Democrats in position to push through these much-needed reforms — reforms like raising the minimum wage, improving schools, and expanding health care coverage. Through Raising the States, we put power in the hands of those who will use it for good. Find out more about this campaign.

"Working Society" and "New America Initiative"
In September, Senator Edwards gave a speech at the Center for American Progress, where he discussed the structural poverty that was exposed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and how the country needs to seize this opportunity to take the steps necessary to fight poverty and expand opportunities for everyone in our country. Also in this speech, Senator Edwards called on his fellow citizens to recommit themselves to a "Working Society" and discussed the ideas of his "New America Initiative". For more information on a "Working Society" and the "New America Initiative", read the fact sheet.
