China slams Aso's comments that Japan rule helped Taiwan education

BEIJING — China on Sunday slammed remarks by Foreign Minister Taro Aso that Taiwan's present high educational standards resulted from compulsory education implemented by Japan during its colonization of the island.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said: "It is a fact known the world over that during Japan's colonization, residents of Taiwan were regarded like slaves, which brought great misfortune on the Chinese people," he said.

relations with Russia are Okay. Japan's relations with Taiwan, the Philippines, Mongolia, India, United States, Australia, Papua New Guinea, etc. are also doing great".

You forgotten to mention the many Africian countries also.

You can say that Japan is doing great only if she can be like Germany, having great relationship with countries suffered directly under her occupation.

I loved Jennie 's post. The link to Taipei Times. All should take time to read it. It is a wonderful example of restrained, factual journalism. No hype or hysteria here.

I'm not so kind though, as my own thought is that Aso should reflect on his own lack of education! My guess is htat whilst Japan was out educating the region, they forgot to educate themselves, and hence substandard people like himslef have made it as politicians! Amazing though, as only in Japan could anyone with such racist views could hold a political position, let alone "foreign minister". Wow.

Is Aso in line...

"good the Japanese brought to Asia in the past except for death, rapes, torture, looting and destruction."

Imperial Japan certainly did bring those things to Asia. But in doing so they effectively eliminated the
colonial monopoly that the European powers had in asia for centuries. And mind you, races beneath the superior "White Race" weren't treated exactly well.
Actually the worst thing that Imperial Japan did was to pave the way for the CCP to take over China.

I couldn't agree more with this. In fact when Japanese PM Tanaka met with both Chou En Lai and Chairmanm Mao himself in 1972, Mao told Tanaka that Japan should be thanked because with the Japanedse invasion the CCP would never have been able to out Chiang Kai Shek and come to power.
So yes, China is indeed grateful.

sapporoman quote:

"Haven't you noticed that for the past few decades, the Asian nations surrounding Japan have and still continue to emulate Japan. Especially South Korea."

Didn't Japan emulated Korea and Korean cultures for the last few hundred years? Now the tide is turning, Korean wave is hitting the Far Eastern nations. Afterall, there are elements of superficial materialism evidented in Asian socities of late. If you would like to call that emulation, so be it, but nothing to boast about.

At least Aso's comments

I think your comments are correct.
Imperial Japan did pave the way to power for CCP.
Imperial Japan did break colonial monopoly of Europeans ;but Asian people suffered more under Japan's rule. However it is safe to say that Imperial Japan gave inspirations to Asian people in their fights for independence, freedom from Europeans later on.
Inspirations were the good things that Japan brought to Asia.
I think if FM Aso stick to that fact it will be less controversial for him .

Who's speaking for Asians

It is ridiculous that someone here on this page would speak as if he/she is speaking for other Asians. No one in Asia asked Japanese to rescue them. China was doing fine on its own, starting to regain more economic strength after the humiliating unequal treaties, but the revival was crushed by Japanese aggression. India, on the other hand, were still firmly controlled by colonial Britain after the surrender of the Japanese emperor. These are the two most important nations in Asia - Japan did not help break the shackle of european (India) but rather crushed the peaceful revival of another neighbour (China). Had it not been for Japanese scoundrels, China's peaceful rise would have arrived half a century earlier.

Even for lands that were colonized by European at the time, Japanese brought huge sufferings by murder, torture, rape, force-labour, and sex-slave, and all sort of unspeakable terror. Japanese should consider themselves lucky that they are under the protective umbrella of uncle Sam, otherwise, it would be totally justifiable to subject their own citizens to the same fate when the lies they emitted in the last century are being unabashedly emitted again.

Noone speaks for anyone else here;each person can only gives his/her opinions.
History is about things happened in the past;no "if",no"but".
Ofcourse, nobody asked Japan for rescue the same as nobody asked Europeans for invasions.
I firmly believe that the good things Japan brought to Asia were "Inspirations".

So Japan invaded other Asian countries to drive out the West? Really, if so, why not give those countries self determination first before making Korea and Taiwan a colony, or creating Manchuko? The "we are uniting Asians under an Asian power" is a nice little moral justification for imperalism, but it still doesn't mean imperalism was/is good. Ever heard of the poem "The White Man's burden" by Rudyard Kipling, which basically states that out of moral obligation to educate the barbaric masses, the western powers were justified to go colonize? The way many are saying Japan was just chasing out the west by colonizing other asian countries, and the claims made by Aso, makes me think of "White Man's Burden, version Japan."

As for infrastructure building, other imperial powers did infrastructure building too. You honestly think roads were fundamentally built for the people? Roads fundamentally are built so the war engines can roll through with greater ease. So other colonial powers, as well as Japan, built them. Like wise, Japan was not alone in forcing complusory education; Britain did too, as did France, at least compulsory elementary education up to a certain level. College etc were all voluntary.

It's not Japan, but what Taiwan decided to do after self determination that decided it's current course and future.

Taiwan is cool!
