Kit Cars based on Volkswagens

I am a kit car enthusiast. I am also an air-cooled VW enthusiast. So naturally I am most interested in kit cars based on Volkswagens.

Here is a list of kit cars built on Volkswagen chassis. I hope it will be helpful to people restoring old kit cars and looking for information. It should also be helpful to people just curious about what kits exist/existed. I want to make this list as complete as possible.

If you know of any other VW based kit cars, have additional photos, have any additional information at all, or know of any good Web links to kit car information please send e-mail to Ed at: vwkitcars@geocities.com

This site will evolve and grow as I get more information about the cars. Come back soon to see what's new.

Aztec GT

AztecGT Photo
It was built by Fiberfab in the late '60's or early '70's. They built a version with gull wing doors and a version that had a lift up canopy like the Sterling.
I have heard a rumor that the flip top version is an earlier model and is just called an Aztec (no GT).

The car pictured above is owned by Mike Brown of Electro Automotive. He worked for FiberFab briefly and spent many years as a VW dealership mechanic. Check out his web site at: http://www.electroauto.com

This car is very similar to the Aztec GT. The nose is a little longer and the tail turns up.

Aztec 7

Aztec 7 Photo Photo: John Mellberg
Made by Fiberfab aka Classic Motor Carriages(CMC).

It's a replica of an Alfa Romeo Carabo, a prototype built by Bertone.
The Carabo is the car that the Lamborghini Countach is based on, and was the first car with "scissor" doors.

The windshield is from a Lamborghini Miura.

Invader GT

Invader GT Photo Photo: Ron Colosi
The January 1998 issue of "Kit Car" magazine says this about the car:
"The Invader GT was build by Autokit in Alameda, California, in the 1970s. Company owner Bruce Weeks designed the VW-based kit car while in college and sold kits in both the United States and Europe. The basic kit (minus the doors) sold for $695 in 1973 and the deluxe kit (with plexi doors, upholstery, seats, and hinges) was an additional $200. The windshield is from a VW Karmann Ghia. The Invader was featured in the Oct. '73 issue of Popular Mechanics and the July '72 Road & Track. The doors and some other parts are available from Sun Ray Products (612/780-0774)"

When Autokit went under Kaylor (listed below) bought the molds.

Manx SR

Manx SR Photo
Manx started the VW based Dune Buggy craze with the Meyers Manx. Manx also made the Manx SR, a "sports car" version of the dunebuggy. It had scissor doors like in a Countach. Almost all were VW Beetle-based. Right before production stopped a handful of front-engined, front-wheel drive Ford based ones were built.

Sabre

Sabre Photo
The Sabre is built on a Type 3 floorpan, and was designed and manufactured as a kit and a limited production vehicle on the Gold Coast, Queensland Australia. There were several models built. Some with doors, some like a buggy with no doors, and some, like this factory production model convertible had very shallow doors so the box section strengthened the floor pan and got rid of any body flex. This also allows it to run very stiff suspension and there is no body roll in cornering.

Sethera

Sethera Photo
The Sethera is manufactured in the Netherlands. It costs f.10,000 (about $5000 US dollars) for the basic kit, including windshield and other glass. It fits on a standard VW Beetle chassis.
Check out Peter Steenhuis' web site for additional information and photos: http://leden.tref.nl/pa3fgz/sethera.htm. He is building a Sethera and is friends with the manufacturer.

Spidermania

Spidermania Photo
The Spidermania is manufactured in the Sweden. It is made by a company called Dalhems. They say that the kit includes the body, doors and front windscreen. It costs 30,000 SEK including VAT. (about $3900 US dollars). It is mounted on an ordinary VW Beetle chassis.
For more information, go to the Dalhems web site at http://www.dalhems.com. Go to the "VW BEETLE" section.
