Sixth Annual Johnson House Book Fair

EventsAnonymous writes "The Johnson House Historic Site will host its sixth annual Book Fair on Sunday, May 15, 2005. The sale of books will take place from Noon until 4:00 p.m. and will include new, children’s and classic books, something for the entire family. The event is free and a portion of book sales will go to support this National Historic Landmark for its role on the Underground Railroad. Scheduled tours of the site will be available.

The program will highlight one of Philadelphia’s leading Underground Railroad “conductors”, William Still, who assisted untold numbers of fugitives heading north to freedom. You will be able to hear his words as spoken by one of his descendants from the 2005 Plexus Publishing, Inc. reprint of his book The Underground Rail Road. William Still’s book narrates the activities of nearly 200 slaves, has over 60 black and white illustrations, and includes letters, newspaper clippings, and biographical sketches of 19th century abolitionists. The book has not received the attention that it should; it is a story about our history that should be included in every home.

Storyteller Linda Goss and Musician Alfie Pollitt will present African-American Literature from Slavery to the Civil Rights Movement at 1:00pm. This Words and Wisdom program is co-produced with the Rosenbach Museum and Library.

Poetry Readings will be presented by the Johnson House Youth Writers, a group of young students who use the Johnson House for inspiration, in cooperation with Arcadia University.

The event is free and open to the public and continues our tradition of celebrating great literature, particularly for children, about the Underground Railroad. "

importance of preserving the past. 29 history organizations across the

Do Not Miss the fifth annual Conductors Ball fundraiser

EventsAnonymous writes "Johnson House Historic Site presents its fifth annual fundraiser, the Conductors Ball. This is a chance to honor three community leaders, enjoy great food and music, and support the Johnson House—the only documented station on the Underground Railroad in Philadelphia that is open to the public as a museum. The Johnson House, a National Historic Landmark, is celebrating great progress in the preservation efforts and education programs that bring thousands of students and visitors to the Germantown site.

This year’s honorees are Carol Lawrence, former commissioner of Arts and Culture for the City of Philadelphia; Dr. Leroy Nunery, Vice President of Business Services for the University of Pennsylvania; and Patricia Wilson Aden, former director of the National Trust Mid-atlantic region and longtime Johnson House supporter.

Music and dancing will be provided by the stellar jazz combo Valray in Good Company, featuring vocal stylings by Valray backed by a who’s who of Philly jazz greats.

This year’s Conductors Ball will take place Saturday, November 6, from 7:00pm to midnight at the Hall of Flags, Houston Hall, University of Pennsylvania, 3417 Spruce Street. Tickets are $50. For more information, please call the Johnson House, 215-438-1768.

Johnson House hires first full-time executive director.

News from the Johnson HouseAnonymous writes "In May 2004, the Johnson House welcomed David W. Young as its first-ever full-time executive director. Cornelia Swinson chaired the search committee that spent seven months screening and interviewing candidates to narrow down to a final choice. Prior to coming to the Johnson House, David W. Before that he was the director of education and community relations at the Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia History. He has published on Germantown and Philadelphia history and has written a children’s history book on the Declaration of Independence for Capstone Press.
