From the "About" webpage:

Welcome to 808Talk. We are two guys talking about events, happenings, and pretty much everything that is going on in Hawaii or as we like to call it "The 808 State". For a short time now myself (V.Brown a.k.a. 808Rider) and my good friend (J. "BigDaddy" Plummer) have been wanting to start a podcast where we could just discuss the crazy happenings that go on in our Island Paradise. There are a few other podcast currently coming from Hawaii, but most of them deal with tech info, electronics and the web. This lead us to open the new 808Talk Podcast so we can inform both local Hawaii listener's and those around the world that may be planning a trip to Hawaii or just want to listen in and see what goes on out here. We plan on starting weekly podcast detailing upcoming events in Hawaii and hope you will tune in and download our podcast each week. Also be sure and tell others about the 808Talk Podcast and help us spread the Aloha of the Hawaiian Islands.

What would you expect from a podcast aptly named 808Talk?  Well, as someone who isn't from the U.S. I wasn't sure what the 808 stood for.  I knew the Beastie Boys like to use one, but that's about it.  It turns out 808 is the telephone area code for Hawaii.  I checked that out before I listened to the podcast as I needed to know.  This little tidbit almost made me not bother with the podcast as I didn't think a bunch of information on Hawaii was anything that I needed to know.

Well, other than the first couple of minutes for news from the local area, the podcast isn't really about Hawaii.  Wait, I retract that, it is, but not in the way that you think.  For the first few minutes, like I said, there was some news which I really could care less about, although some of it was interesting, which surprised me.

Having never been to Hawaii it really is of interest to me to hear about the islands and what happens there.  The podcast wasn't all about what goes on around the islands, but more about daily life and a culture that is truly foreign to me.  Sure, the trend of globalization makes each region of the world a little closer, but with different customs you can learn a lot about the people you're listening to.

There's a stereotype, which I can only assume I've come to know of by watching movies, that's prominent in V. Brown and J. "Big Daddy" Plummer.  It's the one that says that the people from the Hawaiian Islands are a laid back and relaxed people.  Well, you can hear it in the way they speak that it's very much true.  The usual good sound and articulate voices of the co-hosts makes this a very easy podcast to listen to.

The shows I listened to had a lot of talk on Hawaii.  With glimpses into the culture, an interview with a local band, and some news on the Lost cast, I'd have to say it's worth a try, even if you aren't sure.  You just never know what you'll hear.
