Getting Started

You've got a computer and an internet connection (preferably broadband) and if you want to take your Podcasts with you, you'll need a portable audio player. Now you need a software program that can manage your Podcasts; WNYC recommends two:

WNYC Pubcatcher is already loaded with links to WNYC Podcasts as well as offerings from NPR, the BBC and many more.
Download PC Version
Download Mac OS X Version

iTunes from Apple (version 4.9 or higher includes Podcast support)
Download Mac or PC Version
itunes Visit WNYC's Podcasting page on iTunes

Once you choose and install the software on your computer you're all set to subscribe (for free) to shows and start Podcasting!  The programs will keep your favorites current and should transfer the downloaded Podcasts to an audio player on your computer (iTunes, Windows Media player, etc).  For more detailed instructions check our Extra Help page.

Podcasting Help

Great... but what's a Podcast?
Podcasting is an easy new way to automatically download audio programs to your computer. You use free software to choose programs you like; the software checks the internet regularly and starts a download whenever it finds something new. You can listen to the programs you download on your computer or, better yet, you can take them with you on a portable MP3 player (iPod or similar). That means you can listen to a selection of programs any time and anywhere you like! Even in the subway!

Do Podcasts Cost Anything?
Although you can “subscribe” to automatically receive new programs whenever they are available, there is no money involved. WNYC does not charge, and has no plans to charge for our Podcasts or other On Demand audio programming.

What do I need to get started with Podcasting?
Here's what you'll need: a computer (PC or Mac), an internet connection, and (free) podcasting software.

Why doesn’t WNYC offer podcasts of music programming?
While WNYC is permitted to broadcast music on our radio stations and in our live internet streams, copyright laws do not allow us to offer downloads of programs which feature complete pieces of music. We do offer select segments of Soundcheck, our daily music talk show, as podcasts.
