I have started checking out your site and plan to bookmark it for frequent re-visits. I am also passing it along to others I know who operate sound systems. Great resources and advice! I've done church sound for several years at different churches and appreciate the advice your site gives. I also realize there are several areas for improvement that hopefully we can implement in the future.
May God bless.

I have just sat down in front of a Mackie CFX 20 and did not understand one word or reference to technical terms in the introduction of the "Instruction"? manual. I have been searching the web for a glossary and found yours. Thanks. I am starting from cold scratch. What is the single best source to help me do this?

Thankyou for creating this site! It was a huge help to me. I did a science fair project in school recently on sound and much of it involved Fletcher-Munson Equal Loudness Curves. This page really helped me understand human hearing ranges better, and the page having been written from a Christian perspective was even better! It's a really great site.Thank you!

A very great site. This site is one of good opportunities to learn more about the technical equipments in oversea-churches. By the way, I am wondering about the big PA-Speakers in almost each church. Only for good music? In Germany almost not possible. What about the small and powerful column-speaker in association with some subs? Who has got an answer? Is there no market and interest for column-speaker?

I'm impressed with the wealth of information that you freely give here; I first didn't expect to read so much on _church sound and acoustics_, but then when I saw it, expected it to all be just a sales pitch. Not here, you're teaching the church community. Other church audio web sites (with the exception of one or two) are just to get sales; they don't want to give up any important information that may cost them a job. They don't want to give away too much information. Your site on the other hand is freely giving to the church community. My only hope is that they really listen to your wise words of advice and heed the warnings you give also. My church thought it unneccesary to do any such thing, and now we live with our mistakes every day. Thank you for being a light in the dark world of church audio and acoustics!

I am very happy to have found this site! I have recently "inherited" the sound responsibilities of my church. It is hard to say "inherited" because noone was actually responsible before. Whover was there would turn the knobs until it sounded okay.....I have much to learn and am brand spanking new at this so I appreciate resources such as this.

To ACS Thanks for a very informative website, very unlike many sites on sound. Mr Erik Doting is quite right in his comments of churches in the Philippines, my home. After acquiring your book, managed to improve, using your very lengthy discusions, the sound in our local church, simply by the installation of a central speaker (made by a local manufacturer). The improvement was remarkable, and localization of the source was there. We had suffered from unintelligible sound for many years. This project alone paid for the book. We do use your site to spread the WORD.

Russia - Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at 10:22:17 (EDT)
My name is Eric Doting and I am the missionary to the Philippines who spoke with you on Wednesday. Just wanted to thank you for the encouragement and instructions concerning how to purchase a copy of the book, "Why Are Church Sound Systems and Church Acoustics So Confusing?"
I lived in the Philippines for over 4 1/2 years and will be returning again long-term to the Philippines, probably in October. Over the years most of my work has involved training ministers at a Bible school and also quite a bit of crusade work. In the future, my emphasis will be more on the translating of children's and adult discipleship materials and probably planting a church nearby on the island of Cebu.
I do enjoy worship and music, so I also try to be of assistance to the Filipino pastors here on the island of Negros. As I mentioned in my phone call, so many of the churches here have a concrete floor, concrete walls with a number of windows along the side and a concrete ceiling (or a wood ceiling or an exposed steel roof). The rooms really do leave a lot to be desired and I know most of the church buildings here will never sound like church buildings in America! But I believe there are some very real and practical things we can do to improve the sound of the buildings here in the Philippines. Thank you for the website!
I received the book and have been reading, underlining and highlighting for the last several days in the book. I have a friend who does sound installations and another friend who is an architect (he has designed a number of churches) - so I will be discussing many of the points in the book with them. Now that I have finished reading the book, I will let the architect have the book for a week or so and then my sound installation friend can look at it next. The architect made the comment that "It looks like a good book and we all need to be willing to learn" - I believe that is very true.
I truly do appreciate the web sites (allchurchsound & jdbsound) and your kind help. All of you have obviously worked very hard to learn/gather all of this information and I am more than willing to pay you for your time and expertise. I can see (after reading the book) there are a number of relatively simple and not too expensive changes that Filipino churches can make, which will give much better results during church services. I can also see that in any crusades we have, I need to have one stack of GOOD speakers instead of the traditional (and incorrect) left/right setup.
Thank you again for your help in building God's Kingdom as we gather
the harvest in these last days.
Keep up the good work here.

I am the sound engineer for Hope Chapel South Shore here in Waikiki in Honolulu http:\\www.hopechapelsouthshore.org - I appreciate your site. It has halped me understand my job more. I have a very difficult room - the walls from 4 feet down to the floor, and the front and back walls are painted concrete block. The floor is sealed concrete. From four feet off the floor to the roofline are open wood jalousie windows (when I say open, we can't close them - the average sound level right outside the building is about 10db less than inside). The ceiling is peaked stained wood slats under an asphalt shingle roof. (the space was used as a school cafeteria in the past). We rent the room Sundays only, so we can't make permanent changes. I am thinking of buying a big Sonitube, and just climbing inside it! Wayne

Just found the site. After reading the guest book, I am eager to learn more about what your information and services. Our church is small (about 30 regular attendees- sanctuary is about 30 ft by 50 ft) but is presently looking into purchasing sound equipment but are at a loss of knowledge for what we really need. Had one quote of $4,000. Small church with small budget. May look into a portable system to start. Any suggestions or comments would be helpful. I look forward to reading more your website. Thanks. I want to thank you Blake for all the e-mail assistance. Reading all the articles on sound acoustics was very applicable to my situatio in our sanctuary. Following your advice and instructions, we performed a test run using 8 pieces of sona tube. We don't know all of the details of how it should be done properly in a permanant setting, but our cheap experiment proved this is a very good solution. The "back wall echo" was changed dramatically. What a difference sona tubes make. We will be making plans and scheduling Blake to come and perform a full assessment of our acoustics and sound system.

I wonder how come I didn't know about your site and company. [I have been working with sound and video since days of high school, in the US Navy (ET-1, radar and communications). Have worked in TV and AM broadcasting some; presently retired from AT?. I substitute in my church sound, produce live broadcast, do weddings and funerals, and sing in choir and groups.] I have been in three of Curt Taipale's seminars, and attended every one of Ancha Workshops about every other year. I wish I had known about your seminar sooner, I might have been able to attend. We could have taken some of our neophites. I hope I can keep in touch. Rich

Blake, I am tech support person for a major audio manufacturer, a musician (if we're counting bass players this week), and a church sound engineer. I've been doing church sound since back in the days when a Shure Vocal Master and Altec A-7s were a concert system (well, my group thought so!). I wish I would have had a resource back then when I was learning by trial and error. There is a Gold Mine of Information on this web site for everyone. Blake is a Worship Leader's dream. He has a combination of technical expertise, and an understanding that a soundboard operator is a most crucial (if not the most crucial) member of your worship team. He understands listening to what a Worship Leader is trying to accomplish in a service, and helps him to achieve the final result. I would highly recomend Blake and All Church Sound, for the training of your sound team.

It's great to know someone out there who's doing the same thing as we are. Just that we doing it here in Singapore and for churches around this region. Praise God for you, and may He continue to bless your works!

Fantastic! I sing with a gospel group and you could never imagine the messes we get into. We work with a lot of churches in the area and it's discouraging to find that our churches spend so much money on things they don't need and no-one is trained. I'd love to down-load every artical you have, bundle them up and send to every church in the area. SHADES OF CALVARY

I enjoy reading your "Sound Advice" publication and support your position about NOT becoming "too technical". Thanks for helping us keep our focus on the WHY and the WHO part of serving our Lord, not just the WHAT.

Even though I haven't had Blake and All Church Sound install a system in my own church, I've learned a lot just by reading the "What About" Series. It's been a joy to watch ACS grow and prosper!

Wow! What a great web page for such a cool friend (although it was weird to see his picture on the internet. The "what customers said" section is particularly cool - and all entirely true. That is the way Blake is. Could you set up a system in my room? -Eric Ortlund

Really cool site! Great info. For those of you who don't know All Church Sound, take it from one who DOES -- Blake is a great resource for any church sound project. He knows his stuff, and he's someone you can TRUST.
