### Welcome ###

FIRST TIME SITE VISITORS: For those of you who are new to the site, and new to the game of court tennis, an explanation, and an invitation. This is not tennis like that played at Wimbledon or the U.S. Open. "Court tennis" (or "real tennis, as it is known elsewhere in the English-speaking world) is the original game of tennis, virtually unchanged for centuries and still played worldwide. If you are curious to know something of the history of lawn tennis' predecessor, you've come to the right place!

Jeu de Paume at Pau, in Southwest France

(August, 2005) An Anglo French team led by Chris Bray and Olivier Michel are trying to return the old Jeu de Paume in Pau back to its original use.  Pau is a beautiful town set in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the south west of France, with a long history of Jeu de Paume. It is here at the chateau that Henry IV of France, was introduced to and developed his passion for the game.  The court was built in 1887 ... click here for full article

  • Trivia Corner

Tennis Trivia - Think you know the game?

This one's easy; you can find it on this site: Does the Pau court have a full 3-sides penthouse, yes or no and if no, which is/are missing?

Who is this pro?  Bonus: What's that on his head?

Congratulations to Tyler Hathaway, who took no time at all to figure out this is Ken Jacobs,

with the tips of the Tuxedo court's main wall oak leaves just visible behind him (or are they?)

ADVERTISEMENT: COURT TENNIS books are few and far between. In some 600 years of the game's existence, there are fewer than 100 titles in English, French, Italian, and Dutch. This compares with some 2500 titles in Lawn Tennis. Court Tennis books are generally hotly collected. Most are in short print runs of a high quality, usually 500 or fewer copies, which fact makes them even more difficult to locate. As so few people play the game, and as meaningful collections take so long to accumulate, libraries of Court Tennis books tend to be passed on from generation to generation, rather than coming onto the open market.  Alan Chalmers (The Tennis Bookshop) has been offering a low profile service for collectors of racket sports for 15 years (Court Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Rackets/Racquets, Squash Rackets, Longue Paume, Pelota, Fives). If you are interested to know more about what is available in this fascinating sector of the book collecting market, Alan has a web site: www.tennisbookshop.com .   Email him at alan@tennisbookshop.com.

Alan Chalmers now has THE TENNIS BOOKSHOP ON E-BAY: "I have opened my own e-Bay store to sell off the many items of low-value ephemera I accumulate when buying collections, items which seem to sell better with a picture for all to see wherever you are in the world, rather than with a description in the newsletters. Many customers collect printed items, so there may be opportunities at prices starting as low as $4.99.  To visit my store, 1: go to www.ebay.com; 2: click on “e-Bay Stores”; 3: at Find a Store, enter “The Tennis Bookshop” in the search field; 4: click on “Search Stores; 5: click on “The Tennis Bookshop”, and this will open up the list of items I am selling. Why not add this to your favorites list? I will try to keep listing a steady supply of such items."

From Alan Chalmers, The Tennis Bookshop: I WANT TO BUY quality titles on Real/Court Tennis of all periods, and editions of the green Cavendish booklets with the rules of “The Game of Lawn Tennis” from 1876 to 1890.
